I'm looking for where to start for Bad Religion. I'm probably going to start with Stranger than Fiction, unless there is a better place to start.

The Empire Strikes First, New Maps of Hell, Recipe of Hate are all good starting places for Bad Religion.

I think my friend actually has New Maps of Hell, and we filetransfer on a regular basis, so I'll make sure to ask for that.

I do already have "New Dark Ages" and as simple as it is (I mean, who didn't see the opening lyric of the chorus coming?) it's a good track.

Since Gowie's here, starting point for the Pixies.

No album could fail for the Pixies as a starting point. I started with Doolittle, but I'd probably say Bossanova or Trompe le Monde depending on the persons taste.

I'm looking to branch out into other styles of metal or anything else which might work. I love melodic metalcore and mid-to-late melodeath (e.g. I really dig Slaughter of The Soul but can't get into The Red In The Sky Is Ours).

I've thought about folk metal, and I like what I've heard so far, so recommendations on that would be nice (I already listen to Amon Amarth). Any other genres I might like would help too, though. I'm also digging Atheist a bit, so other similar bands wouldn't hurt. For what it's worth, I also listen to some post-grunge (Candlebox, Trapt), nu-metal (Disturbed, Slipknot), and Tool (not sure how to classify them). And of course, if anybody has any serious recommendations for melodeath or metalcore I might like, I'm all ears.

Here's my last.fm to cut off most recommendations for bands I already listen to:

Oh, and I know how most of the people around here feel about recent metalcore and nu-metal. I don't care.

    Great stuff, thanks. :)

EDIT: Agh! Stop ganging up on me on last.fm!

I wouldn't call Amon Amarth folk metal. You can call them Viking Metal, but Viking Metal doesn't automatically mean folk. Amon Amarth is melodic death.
Folk metal is a pretty big and varied genre, but I'd say start looking at Ensiferum, Korpiklaani, and Tyr if you're a fan of Amon Amarth to keep the viking feeling going.

Gates of Ishtar and Eucharist both have 5 or fewer plays in your library, so I'm not sure if you just heard them on last.fm or if you really listen to them. Either way, you'll probably like them.

I didn't see any Wintersun in there, they're melodeath with a bit of a folk metal feel to it.

Kalakai is a melodeath band who just put out their first album this year (Kalakai, self-titled), and it's solid.

If you like Atheist, check out Cynic. Also probably Opeth (didn't think I saw any in your last.fm, but you'll dig them).

With Tool you obviously want to check out Maynard's side-projects (A Perfect Cirlce, Puscifer). Also look into Rishloo.

In terms of metalcore, check out some of the stuff that led to the current wave (yet was still good). Converge and Zao specifically.

Blame the RB Metal Ed. setlist thread. Amon Amarth won the "favorite folk metal band" day.

Heh, I really listen to them. I think I deleted the first Eucharist album though (couldn't take the production).

Yeah, I have them, but I think I just recently grabbed that album, so I don't have any plays in last.fm yet.

Yeah, I already got this band from you. Any album similar to Darkest Hour (as you said they were) is an instant download for me.

    Will do.

Of course I know APC. :p Puscifer I never got around to checking out, but I am very aware of its existence. I'll look into Rishloo (especially since a quick Wiki tells me they're heavily influenced by Tool and APC).

To be honest, I've tried to get into 90s metalcore, and aside from some early Darkest Hour and Unearth it just didn't grab me. Perhaps the punk influence is too strong, but more likely I like melodic metalcore because of the heavy melodeath influence. I've listened to Converge and Zao, as well as Burst, Hatebreed, Rorschach, and other bands you've recommended (not that I needed to be directed to Hatebreed), and I didn't feel it. Sorry to disappoint you. ;)
