But you should definitely investigate more traditional tech death, such as earlier Gorguts, Lykathea Aflame (though they border on prog death), and Decrepit Birth. Others really like Nile, Necrophagist, and Decapitated (though I'm not really a fan). I'm particularly partial to the more melodic (often bordering on melodeath) tech death bands, such as Arsis and Quo Vadis.

I'ma second all of the bands in bold...
Necrophagist and Arsis are among my favorite bands, especially in tehc-death.

I swore that I mentioned Nocturnus in the Death/Black Metal Recommendation thread. That being said, Nocturnus are awesome.

I liked The Incident, but, then again, I have a soft spot for that sort of long-form composition. The end is pretty weak, but it's a very consistent album apart from those final five minutes.

The first two are very Avant Garde.... so just keep that in mind. (they're also the only ones I know of on the list besides the At The Gates one which I don't like.)
Also, Pierced From Within by Suffocation is a great album you should try.

i like long-form stuff, but there was little in it that interests me, i'm gonna give it another shot sometime soon, but i still felt it was weak compared to most of their other material

Almost nothing on that list is "traditional" death metal, so keep it in mind. It's mostly progressive/avant-garde/melodic/technical in nature. I'm a huge fan of the last two albums. The Red in the Sky is Ours is my favorite album of all-time, and A Velvet Creation is basically early AtG-worship with better production and a little more traditional structures.

Overall, most of the albums on the list are quite good, and are worth a listen.

Haven't listened to this album in forever. Definitely time for a spin.

I recommend Edge of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrows

Screamo isn't a metal genre so I'm not sure why you're mentioning it.

I'll be sure to recommend you some growling, shrieking, rasping, yelling, guttural grunting, shouting, and pig squealing vocals instead.

Better yet, say you want clean vocals, so as to avoid what Onslaught suggested out of spite.

To be fair, thrash metal ("shouted"/"barked") vocals probably wouldn't offend his sensibilities, but often really aren't "clean" vocals. Even some modern/melodic metalcore vocals would probably fall into the same general area.

But the gist of your statement stands true.

Can somebody give me some good metal to start with for someone who has no history at all with it and usually listens to "soft" stuff if you will. This isn't a joke, so I'll pass on death metal to start. Thanks.

Kingdome Come - Sir Lord Baltimore (should be a great start)
