Just buy both Focus and Traced in Air.

I would say that you wouldn't regret it, but then again I think you said you're not a Death fan, so I don't know...

I've really been digging these lyrics from these guys, anyone have bands similar lyrically and musically?

Check out The Olivia Tremor Control and The Apples in Stereo, those are the other 2 main Elephant 6 bands besides Neutral Milk Hotel. The Mountain Goats also have lo-fi/indie leanings, though they aren't quite as obsessed with Anne Frank. I'm not as familiar with Andrew Jackson Jihad, so someone else might have to help you on that.

dragging an ox through water - the tropics of phenomenon

Not Tonight's Decision! I have a giant boner for Katatonia, but that album just doesn't do it for me. Last Fair Deal Gone Down is easily their best, followed by Discouraged Ones.

I agree! Focus is great, but Traced In Air is just on another level. It's... perfect.

i've recently DL'ed full discographies for the following bands:

Yo La Tengo (exclude "I Am Not Afraid Of You...")
    Pulp
Blur (exclude Parkilife which i already had b4)
    Nine Inch Nails
    Slowdive
    Lush

where do i begin with for these bands because sometimes it can be intimidating having so much music and no idea where to start.

I think I already told you, but.

The first 3 Pulp albums aren't good. They each contain a "few" good songs. You want to start with His N' Hers, then go in order from there. Different Class -> This Is Hardcore -> We Love Life.

For Blur, just go in order. All of their albums are good (except for The Great Escape IMO).

A few highlights for each band:

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One, May I Sing With Me
    Blur - Leisure
    NIN - Downward Spiral, Broken
    Slowdive - Souvlaki
Lush - Spooky (one of the best shoegaze albums ever, IMO), Gala

Don't forget the other albums by the bands, though. Each of these bands has great albums that aren't necessarily the best starting point, so you should get around to listening to it all eventually (except maybe the last couple Blur albums... and everything NIN's done in the last 10 years)

also in the past 2 hours i've listened to Fakebook which was really poppy and catchy and And Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out which has been good so far

I'm really liking Jawbreaker's Dear You right now. What is the next album I should listen to after this and what bands are similar to them.

Is anyone familiar with a jazz fusion group called The Yellowjackets? I got a recommendation from my old music teacher, and like them quite a bit. Looking for stuff similar to them.

Agents of Fortune or Tyranny and Mutation, but you could honestly start with any of their first 5 albums.

Can someone recommend an incredible album that is mainly upbeat, something to dance to, and something that doesn't take itself too seriously. Preferably British, but doesn't have to be. Similar to this if you've heard it.

it's hard for me to say "incredible" since i'm not a fan of the 1990's, but here's a sort similar scottish album you may like...

we were promised jetpacks - these four walls
    a sample tune... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5ZhBAylbN4

Just one album recommendation for now, but boy is it a good one:

Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever

Pretty much any upbeat indie pop will go with what you're looking for, though.

    it's my favorite.
if you're more into punk you may like their more recent ones, death metal fans may prefer soulside journey, and some black metal fans swear by several of the albums surrounding TH's release.

Can I get something similar to the relaxing, acoustic guitar filled sound of Nick Drake. I've been listening to him a lot and I want more.

It edges out A Blaze in the Northern Sky to be my favorite. Though their first album (Soulside Journey) is pretty good death metal, and their last few have taken a turn to crust punk.

if you don't mind a little more psychedelia in the mix you can try donovan, vashti bunyan, tim buckley, karen dalton, the pentangle, bert jansch, and vetiver.

Check out John Martyn and Tim Buckley for similar music from that time period. Even though I'm not a big fan of him, you might want to check out Iron & Wine also.

I asked this before, but I didn't get a response, so here it goes again.

What's the best starting point for the Red Krayola? They have a rather daunting discography, so I'm not quite sure where to start.
