I love Doom, but he can be hit or miss. The DangerDoom album is pretty good, especially if you're a fan of Adult Swim.
It's been said before, but I feel that hip-hop reached it's creative peak (so far) in the 90's. It seemed like many new artists were trying to be taken seriously by the critics and the general public, branching out into many diverse styles and attitudes. I hope that the next era of hip-hop heads back in that direction, since I really can't stand much of today's corporate, club-rap.
We need more hip-hop like this:
Fugees - Vocab
Del tha Funkee Homosapian - Catch A Bad One
Busta Rhymes and ODB - Woo-Hah!!(Remix)
Digable Planets - Rebirth of Slick(Cool Like Dat)
Geto Boys - My Mind Playing Tricks On Me
Has anyone hear heard of Blue Scholars or Doomtree?
I dig a lot of hip/hop, and since there isn't a thread, go-go music. I live in D.C. during the summer, and I love going to restaurants where there are really good go-go artists.
As for hip-hop, Mos Def, Run-D.M.C., Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, The Sugarhill Gang, and The Roots are all really good for mainstream acts. Kanye West's first album I thought was genius, the second one was good, and after that he became the same kind of generic rapper. (Except for using a Steely Dan sample as a hook. Didn't see that one coming)
Yes, I've heard more recent hip-hop, and it's definitely not dead; that's why I added the "so far" to my remark. My point was, in the 90's you could throw a rock and hit a great rap song. Today, the opposite is the case, and you really have to go looking for a lot of the serious artists.
You guys listen to any of the new rappers? As far as up and coming guys?
My favorites are B.o.B., Kid CuDi, Charles Hamilton, & The Cool Kids.
roughly 30 - 40 % of my music library consists of hip-hop. deltron 3030's self-titled, wu's 36 chambers, a tribe called quest's the low end theory, nas's illmatic, and binary star's masters of the universe are some of the greatest hip-hop albums ever.
i don't know why, but a lot of people that i've come across haven't heard binary star's masters of the universe, but check it out!
