They made mistakes hurt more because they thought that solo unison bonuses would make up for it.

One mistake is enough of a blow to your crowd meter that when you get back up, the crowd will cheer again as you topped the meter. It's almost like they cheered for the mistake, not for the recovery.

And, applying this to your idea of a tour, I'm repeating what I said in post 3670.

I would make it really tough to break out of your hometown. Too many fail-outs in this stage and your band gets the Bad Ending: run out of your hometown. Mistake penalty on the crowd meter would be RB3 level, and you would start in the middle of the crowd meter instead of in the green. Attempt to play a bigger venue (maybe opening for a touring band) in this early stage and you will start in the red. When you get the van, you will start in the green. Once you get the Roadies in the tour, the mistake penalty on the crowd meter will lessen, to RB2 levels.

There is no penalty for playing lower difficulties until you get big, so if you fail out early on, it will encourage you to step down, and step back up when you progress in the tour. And instead of a hard fan cap, you will get a soft fan cap - a multiplier less than one for your fan and cred gain.

I rub it in because it's all we've got.

That and the optional bass drum. My wife has (hopefully) temporarily lost the use of her legs and would like to play drums.

Really, bands get run out of your hometown? It's never happened where I live. The worst that happens, is the band just modifies it's lineup. Negative endings like this will not sell more games.

One of the T-shirts in Rock Band 2 (that got lost in the transition to Rock Band 3) was for a fictional band called Krieg (the title said Kreig but the shirt said Krieg). The description said that Krieg was run out of their hometown before bringing sludgecore to the masses.

Okay, how about this for a less negative ending: The band gets a nasty review saying "Stick to Rock Band!", calls it quits, and then go out to the store and pick up a bunch of instruments - the singer gets the Logitech mic, the guitarist gets the Squier and Mustang Pro Guitars, the bassist picks up the basic Strat and P-Bass controllers, the keyboardist gets the keyboard with the stand, and the drummer gets the ION Drum Rocker with all the cymbals. They then gather around the TV playing Rock Band happily, get a great score on all-Pro, and then decide they won't let another bad review get them this down. The career then restarts. You can't get this ending again afterwards.

This unlocks game controllers as available instruments for your characters, the alternative method being just playing once in Pro Mode (Harmonies) to get the associated controllers.

I've heard that, but I'm not sure I buy it. That wouldn't explain why they did that for vocals, or didn't adjust the star cutoffs.

I've got nothing in response to vocals, but they did adjust the star cutoffs - lowering them because of songs that couldn't be GS'd or even 5*'d with so few notes, and factoring in the bonus for a Perfect Instrument Solo into the GS (at least) cutoff.

That happens with all the pre RB3 songs when you add the pro charts.
