Far Cry 3
Eeeehhhhhh. A lot of little mechanics which all work great on their own, but the game fails to coalesce into something whole, and the experience feels hollow as a result. I sleepwalked through the entire game and only a few tiny patches of greatness really separate it from the crowd.
It wasn't bad or anything. I wasn't particularly bored or frustrated or anything like that. But it was far from a captivating experience, and every part was there to make it so.
I finally played "Saints Row 3" last night. As advertised, it's really goofy but it's also clearly the type of game that can hook me in for a long time. I made plans to play for 2 hours and wound up messing around for almost 4. Though it took at least an hour to get it to install & download the update & connect my account to their website, so surely I couldn't quit after only playing one mission (and sitting through a few cut scenes). I loved randomly wandering around the islands [I got my "Gellin' Like Magellan" trophy already] and trying out different cars, and being able to deploy a parachute any time I had to bail out from any kind of height. Eventually I got in over my head, and was sent to the hospital a few times ... and yet, I didn't lose all of my money and weapons, like I would in GTA, I guess because this game doesn't pretend to be hardcore. Fun as it was, I went to sleep thinking I'd enjoy going back to "Just Cause 2" or even "Saints Row 2" even more. And confirmed that I never want to go back to GTAIV, that was just too much work (especially since failing a mission can mean driving for 10 minutes or more, in real time, all over again).
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch looks very intriguing, but I have SO many games to catch up on that it seems foolish for me to throw down $60 for it right now.
Jesus hell, Renegade Femshep is a total *****.
This is my first time playing Renegade Female. And it's honestly making me a little uncomfortable.
Renegade is awesome! It got even better in ME2 and 3 with the interrupts.
I've done Renegade Male before. That seemed a lot more natural. I never wanted to do any of the ME2 romances with Femshep, but I actually don't mind doing the ME1 romance with Kaidan. He's just such a good person (I don't get the complaints that he's bland or boring, I actually think he's a great character), and I'm doing the romance path, and jeeeeezus I'm an ass****. It's so off-putting, especially the way the crew still says I'm doing the right thing.
I've only played Mass Effect 1 and 2, and as with any game with a customizable character, I played a female. I played through both games on paragon and only tried renegade on ME2, and never actually finished it, probably because I just felt so evil.
Downloaded "The Cave" off of Xbox Live Arcade, been enjoying it. Only a short ways in, but it blends great gameplay, graphics and sound (the narrator in particular) with some particularly devious puzzles.
I beat Other M. I still need to go back and get all the missile upgrades and energy tanks but, for the most part, I beat it.
I rented the game a month or two after it came out and returned it as soon as I saw Samus refusing to use her varia suit until Adam told her too even though she was in a ****ing volcano.
Well last week I was at Block Buster and saw they had it used for $5 and figured "what the hell".
As far as gameplay goes I guess it makes sense for Samus to not have all her powers from the very beginning but it makes the story **** to have it be because Adam told her not to use them. Samus is a bounty hunter, why the hell is she obeying orders from her old CO? Anyway even then it only makes sense that her offensive weapons are shut off, why the hell are things like the grapple beam, space jump, and the gravity suit going to be dangerous to have active? Whatever.
My favorite part of the whole game had to have been when Samus lost communication with Adam and decided to activate her space jump and screw attack by herself while in pursuit of The Deleter (really dumb name by the way).
The story isn't very good and the ending was really anticlimactic. Still the game was actually fun, though I would have liked for them to allow more freedom in going back to areas I had already been and for it to not hold your hand every step of the way. But that's the way games are now. It was nice that they found a way to make it a side scroller but have it still seem like a modern console experience. I hope they stick to side scrolling when it comes to Metroid.
Renegade in ME3 sucks, but in ME1&2 it's great.
Just got a Vita, and speed-ordered Virtue's Last Reward so I can finally play the everliving hell out of it. 20-something hours in, three different character endings (Tenmyouji, K, Clover), and lots of suspicions that I'm pretty sure I'm this close to confirming. So many locks, and maybe one or two more split paths to follow before I can unlock some of them!
I'm spoilering this part even though it's speculation that I don't even want confirmed, but I'm guessing Tenmyouji is Junpei from 999, which means that a bunch of people including Clover must have been in cold sleep. This would explain the picture of Akane he's got on him, which would make Akane the old woman that was murdered, apparently by Dio. Her kindness and demureness is pretty much a signature in the original game, which is why K would look to her as a mother figure and kill Dio in revenge. K and/or Sigma are clones, or one or both are robotic, but it's difficult to figure out which is which, although Sigma appears partly artificial (one of the gold files mentioned something about specific body mods, and there's that one timeline in which he's bleeding white--however, he actually seems to die when stabbed, and he's affected by Rad-6 to varying degrees, etc.).
Once that's over with (I'm hoping tonight), I have Touch My Katamari for short rounds and P4G for when I have more time to play. Gravity Rush and AC3L are in my checkout basket for future reference, and I plan on picking up Sound Shapes sometime in the future too. Any other recs?
