I hate genre debates, but I totally disagree. Amesoeurs definitely much less so, but Alcest's take on adding atmosphere to black metal is completely derived from bands like Neurosis, Jesu, and Nadja. I just see it as an ever burgeoning scene of "post-black" metal. Now Drudkh and Todtgelichter have jumped onto the bandwagon and I even hear it creeping into Agalloch's sound. Maybe I'm just hearing things, though...

Arena Rock... not seeing it. With the collapse of the major labels, the ability to bankroll a new arena rock act to the level where they'd be playing the sorts of shows they did in the 80s... it's never happening again. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the bands from the 80s come back and play mid-level venues, bowing to the reality that they can't make a living anymore off of catalog sales.

As for rap-rock/rap-metal, I think that's almost a given, simply due to the oversaturation, over-commercialization, and relative homogenization of a lot of the commercially-available hip-hop music out there. It'll be, once again, trumpeted as a new, innovative form... even if we've seen this going on for the past... what, almost 30 years now? I'm not sure of the commercial appeal of it (apart from some major names potentially dipping their toes in it - wouldn't be surprised to see somebody like Jay-Z or Kanye do that as a side project), but it may be a path that second-tier rappers take in order to differentiate themselves from others already on the scene.

Get ready for Blackened Flamenco Metal ;).

i feel as though either corporate is going to get stronger and further diminish the worth of other genres. Unless this fanboy 13 year old trend diminishes, this is going to get worse and worse. The good bands that i love will either gain a much larger following due to the more and more apparent drawbacks of today's modern artists, or they will become completely indie due to the diversion of their profits and hard work to the "idols."

Genre specific- Metal is going to have to brace for some more emo and punk impacts upon the genre. Seeing how much progress the deathcore scene is making, true straightforward metalheads will have to really fight to keep the persistently ambiguous difference between cores and metals. I have nothing against the cores myself, but i treat them as an individual. The population of that genre should respect that difference as well, or else all hell will break loose on the metal and metalcore communities.
Punk is slowly splitting from pure underground to underground metal influence and mainstream. It's become much more difficult to find those straightforward punk bands. It's either Green Day or ADTR nowadays.
Jazz is dying and will probably become an almost untouched genre in the future, which makes me extremely sad.

The music industry as a whole is facing a spiderweb and a whirlwind of confusion as to which way the sound of today's music will go to.

But since Between the buried and me and some other awesome prog bands from this decade have planted some influential seeds, so some nice bands of that vein should pop up.
