Really now Milwaukee? Who fires their bullpen coach?
Figures that After the Mariners waive the white surrender flag and trade away players for single A pitching prospects they go on a 6 game winning streak.
Correction, 7 game win streak.
Also, the Toronto Blue Jays' season is on life support after somehow being swept by the lowly Mariners.
It ain't just the pitching staff. Bautista, Lind, Arencibia and D'Arnaud (who would've been up for Arencibia and is ranked a top ten prospect) are all on the DL. Encarnacion is limited to DH duties while playing through a sore foot. Escobar was out for three days with a sore back, but is back now. It's the worst I've seen on this team ever.
Which trade exactly do you have a problem with?
Ichiro wanted out.
League was never staying after this season unless the Mariners went nuts and offered him salary arbitration. And it was getting to be a bit of a pain in the ass watching him pitch.
Delabar was all but literally plucked from the scrap heap last year, so turning him into value of any kind, even if it's Carlos Peguero-lite, is a win. And it's not like he can pitch worth a damn outside of Safeco (seriously - for the season, his home OPS against was under .400, road OPS against over 1.000)
I've got no problem with any of the trades. The Ichiro trade surprised the hell out of me, and it saddened me a little, but it makes sense from his perspective. Mitchell isn't any great prospect, possible middle reliever potential, and Farquhar is surely just organizational depth, but that's not a bad haul for a 38 year old outfielder.
Are you for real?
Both of the pitchers acquired in the Ichiro trade have Major League experience. Mitchell is on the 40-man roster right now and we'll probably see him in September. No, he's not a future ace, but the team didn't trade Ichiro 5 years ago, they traded him this year. He could easily be a member of the bullpen as soon as next season.
Farquhar is probably organizational depth (I'm actually a little surprised to see he's had big league experience). He's spent two stints each with the Toronto and Oakland organizations (his early career went TOR-OAK-TOR-OAK...they couldn't decide who wanted him!) along with the Yankees, briefly. He passed through irrevocable waivers earlier this year when the Yankees removed him from their 40-man roster, so yeah...he's no great prize. But your AAA team needs long relievers just like your MLB team does.
Ryan's OPS has been above .700 for the last two months (which is perfectly acceptable for a shortstop), and surely you've seen his defense. He's more than earning his pay. Olivo will be gone this offseason, and Smoak...ugh. Please figure your **** out, Justin.
Now that's true.
I don't think we're putting ourselves on a cross to say we're quite long-suffering fans. Only five teams have longer playoff droughts than the Mariners, and two of them (Nationals, Pirates) have a very good chance of coming off that list this year. And God forbid the Nationals make the World Series.
Obviously the Cubs and the Indians and most every expansion team from the 60's have their reasons to cry too, but they've all been relevant much more recently than the Mariners. The Marlins? To hell with the Marlins. Two World Series in their first 11 years of existence. That makes them the Yankees compared to us.
Doesn't he come off in a couple days?
