3 millions likes? How is this possible, when it looks like only about 5,000 people a week are buying and playing new DLC? Do they like Rock Band without ever playing it, or do they never connect to the internet, or do they just never buy new DLC?

I'm guessing it's mostly the latter? Obviously they can't buy anything if they aren't on the internet in the first place.

I'll be really interested to see how many DLC sales are made in the weeks after RB:B comes out. If only 15% of those 3 million fans buy it [surely a vast over-estimate, but then why would these people consider themselves "fans"?], and if 5% of the people that buy RB:B are inspired to buy new tracks for the first time in forever, that would mean weekly sales would increase 5-fold. Honestly, I wouldn't be stunned if DLC sales didn't at least triple from current levels, at least in the short run, and that would solidify the elite reputation of Harmonix strategists.

Because a Facebook like has nothing to do with purchasing software, DLC, or continuing to play the game?

A person plays Rock Band once at a party. They go like it on Facebook. That is the extent of their usage.

A person plays RB1 for a few months and then stops, having already liked the Facebook page. That is the extent of their usage.

Facebook does not filter out people from a page based on outside factors.

Sure, some of those 3 million people could have clicked the like button long ago, and maybe they never even use FB any more, or they ignore / hide posts from the hundreds of organizations they've indiscriminately thrown a "like" at over the years. But it seems that the numbers are actually continuing to grow, so it's not JUST that.

A more careful look at the data suggests it's more like 30k people that buy DLC on at least a semi-regular basis (every few months). I still don't have a good feel for whether that's a healthy number of users. Healthy enough to keep making DLC every week, it seems.

What data? We can see rough comparisons for DLC on a single console, or look at the leaderboards for another rough gauge. We do not have any idea about individual frequency of purchase, as you're saying right now.

I'm looking at the figures at rockbandscores.com, under "DLC POPULARITY". The most recent songs only have about 5,000 scores listed, but if you go back in time a bit you can see that some songs have as many as 24,000 scores recorded on any solo instrument. Not everyone buys and plays each song right away, and not every week has equally popular songs.

As the site notes, it won't count sales if the person never plays the song, or if they only play it on "no fail mode". Does the 360 really not count a high score made as a full band? The PS3 records individual scores for instrument played in a single performance. There's also a band score recorded, somewhere (since you can check your song leaderboard ranking as a band, within the game), though I can't seem to check my ratings on the rockbandscores site.

this may have been true for RB 2 and 1, but i always play with no-fail on in RB3 and it always counts m.
this probably is because the old RB's didn't allow you to post leaderboard scores or play online with no-fail on

Oh, OK, that's interesting. It DOES look like it's been a while since anything was updated on that site (especially the band ratings, which either aren't in the same format any more or aren't available online in any format). I still find it very useful, hooray for data.

It's telling me that I need to register, but it's not doing anything. It had all my data there, but kept telling me I had to register to see my scores all listed.

I removed the app (and lost my wishlist with extra points in the process), hoping that would resolve the issue, but it didn't.
