    wikipedia is pretty bad about subgenres

    Also, some good math rock bands are Don Caballero and Slint. Both released some amazing albums.

    While very different, if you can handle harsher stuff, there's a lot of killer bands labeled "mathcore"

    I'm aware that Wikipedia is a thing that exists, thanks. I was looking for a personal explanation from a devotee, one that might be a little less long-winded and clinical, and make a little more sense.

    Math rock tends to be, though not always, more dissonant than standard prog rock, as well.
