Hofner Bass - Start Button unresponsive

The Start button on the Hofner Bass has become unresponsive, I have to push it really hard and wiggle it to get it to respond.

Any suggests, guides on how I can fix this?

Does it work fine if you just hold it in for a few seconds? I seem to recall that that the Beatles instruments were designed that way in order to prevent accidental pausing while playing.
