I think you're talking about the very same RBN based on the numbers you listed. He didn't say there was only metal, he said there was too much metal compared to other genres. In your list, Metal leads at 143, the next highest is at 81, and the third highest is at 42. That corresponds exactly to what he said.

There's way more non-Metal than Metal, though. To write off RBN as "the place assy metal goes to die" (and don't get me wrong, it does happen) and nothing else is so ridiculously shortsighted.

I've been pretty happy with the metal on the RBN side, and some other music as well. There have been a few bands that I had not heard before that I really like now, such as Ghost Brigade. And one search led to another kind of thing, that got me into Nightwish. RBN also pointed me to the Guitar Idol contest, which I haven't missed since. I think it's a pretty good source.

There is a strong skewing toward metal in RBN over most other genres. Sure, if you add up every other genre, it outnumbers, but metal is by far higher represented. And as for mainstream bands/songs, there have been very few. Mainstream is what I care about. Songs that are from unknown bands never get played at parties, thus I don't need them filling my hard drive. With over 1600 songs in my collection, I don't want to add songs that don't get play.

As for why I don't like metal--as a vocalist, I absolutely hate growls, as well as shrill pitches ala Rob Halford, Dio, Or Axl Rose. Metal tends to have a lot of one or the other. Don't get me wrong, I like some metal songs, but as a genre, those are few. My tastes are pretty eclectic--from Air Supply to Korn. I like blues. I even like some country, though I would deny that to my wife. But mostly, the reason I avoid RBN is because most of the songs are unknown to me and my crowd.

So it has to be popular to be good. A disappointingly common mindset.

    Well, your loss.

No, it has to be popular to get played. "Good" is a personal taste. Whether or not a song is selected at parties is observable. I have no need for songs that receive no play time.

    Korn's lyrics are generally understandable.

How do you know that a certain RBN song will never get picked if you never allowed it to get picked at least once?
