Just to take an informed wild guess, I'd guess that the main influence on the next album will likely be Metropolis Pt. 2. Why? Of the drummer documentary that DT did, they had everyone play three songs... one was "A Nightmare To Remember" (most prominent track on most recent album), and the other two... were both off of Metropolis Pt. 2 ("The Dance Of Eternity" and "The Spirit Carries On").
I don't consider that the two "legacy" songs chosen both being from the same album a fluke.
I thank Flyguy for telling me to get a last FM account
I just did and I love it
EDIT: aww crap they don't let you listen to playlists
No, it's just the vibe I got during the whole pick a drummer reality stunt, and with the way their music changed after Sherinian and Moore were gone, it makes sense.
Considering three of my top four DT albums are with Rudess (Metropolis Pt. 2, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, and Black Clouds & Silver Linings), that doesn't bother me. If anything, my bigger concern would be if Portnoy had a bigger role in the writing (as he did on Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos), but he's not there now (same could be said for LaBrie with regards to writing, though).
One positive note: It has been announced that Myung is writing at least some of the lyrics on this new album, for the first time since Metropolis Pt. 2.
Here's the track listings:
1. On The Backs Of Angels
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
3. Lost Not Forgotten
4. This Is The Life
5. The Shaman's Trance
6. Outcry
7. Far From Heaven
8. Breaking All Illusions
9. Beneath The Surface
So Rush-like... maybe that's a good thing.
I had seen an interview with Portnoy before he left DT where he said he wanted Myung to write more, but Myung was writing material that didn't really gel well with how the rest of the band worked (namely that he would write lyrics in fragments rather than whole songs). Either with Portnoy gone the rest of the band is more willing to work with his style or he's working more with the rest of the band, the difference is irrelevant. More Myung writing is good.
Black Clouds & Silver Linings had a lot of Rush influence on it, especially on the last two tracks. Wouldn't surprise me to see them continue that trend.
