Considering that Atmospheric Black Metal dates back to the infamous Norwegian Black Metal of the early/mid 1990's, it's not all that new. It seems more like all of these Cascadian Black Metal bands liked the sound that was being made in Burzum albums and tried to do their spin on it. Then again the Norwegian Black Metal scene came to be because a bunch of Norwegian teens really loved Bathory albums and wanted to do their own spin on it.

And what better way to describe modern-day trends better than the hipster. Yeah, they think they're non-conforming, but oh how so sad it's just about the opposite. Most hipsters are sheep, the music, the lifestyle, the fashion, the utter need to feel like they're of sophistication. It only fits the direction in where "sophisticated" black metal is going today, hence my usage for hipster black metal.
I find from personal experience that the sheep that conform to trends thinking they're non-conformists usually gravitate to Metalcore and it's derivitives... ...That or they listen to Between The Buried And Me.

Based on that insane troll logic, Black Sabbath were "Hipster Metal" because they had beards in the 70's.

Correct on this part. This dynamic goes all the way back to when modern man drove the neanderthals to extinction. We had the ability to innovate, adapt, and mimic culture where as they didn't. This translated from mere survival instincts to cave art, hitting hollow tree trunks with clubs, and legends of past mammoth hunts, which all art, music, and culture that we recognize originated from.

In short, you've probably got a point that popular music is built around innovators and trend-hoppers, though I might term the two differently. I just don't think it's a bad thing, by any means, nor is it exclusive to popular music.
There is also the bands that start out as followers of one trend that become innovators later on themselves.

You never know with parents. My dad happens to like Orphaned Land, and he's in his late 50s.

I gave up when my dad kept saying the beginning to Ayreon's Into the Electric Castle sounds like the Moody Blues.

My mom still thinks that Iron Maiden is satanic even after seeing Flight 666 with me, so I haven't tried with anything recent with her.

My mom is kinda close-minded when it comes to music, but never says anything really ridiculous. Her taste isn't a bad one, per se, she just doesn't listen to a whole lot. My dad listens to quite a bit, so he's usually pretty cool to talk music with.

I have a feeling if my mom was alive she would either abhor or adore the dance pop schlock that's coming out enmasse today. I mean she liked Ricky Martin and Backstreet Boys enough to like them herself.

I'm just hoping her fascination with Ricky Martin and Kenny G was due to her brain cancer.

My dad primarily listens to "Dad-Rock" and thinks all the best music came out in the 1970's. That being said, he has acknowledged that some of the bands I listen to have good musicianship although he despises the vocals. My mom listens to Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Live, Dan Fogelberg, and christian music (an odd combination) and has said that I have the worst music taste out of anyone she knows because I was listening to Emperor. My brothers all also hate the music I listen to and even make jokes about it. My sister and her husband are open minded about my music tastes although neither are asking me what I would recommend as far as bands worth checking out goes.

Sounds about right. Can't see anyone liking that stuff otherwise.

Expanding on this, I've found shoegaze is not always the best music of choice for long road trips at night. Generally, I've found a "dream like state" is not really desired while driving.

Won't stop me from listening to it anyway, though.

If it means anything, my mom loves it. Makes her feel hip. "I love the music of your generation!".

    She can keep it.

Barely listening to Xiu Xiu's new album right now and I'm loving it. I will most likely be seeing them after my last day of high school for only $12 at a close venue so I can't wait.
