re parents music taste:
My mum's really into Neutral Milk Hotel and Nick Drake, which is kinda cool.
My dad just listens to generic 'classic rock' with some blues thrown in here and there.
My parents are relatively young still (mid 30's). My mom listens to pop country and she's the only person in this world I know that listens to any type of country period. She also is very fond of Zeppelin and Sabbath and Katy Perry, yeah... my dad listens to anything from generic radio rock to generic metal so like All That Remains, Breaking Benjamin, Staind, etc. My stepdad however, is a metalhead. He's big on Slayer, Maiden, Lamb Of God, The Black Dahlia Murder, stuff like that. He's also a pretty big closet Rush fan I just found out.
Why would anyone want to hide their Rush fandom. Let it shine for the world to see.
Ahh yes that old joke. I've gotten over people saying that.
I think that after making my parents listen to Coheed and Cambria, my Rush fandom didn't come as big shock. My dad actually became quite the Coheed fan.
My mom's taste is all over the place and will listen to pretty much anything. When I found my parents' record collection, most of it was hers. She had stuff like Zappa, ELP, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd discog, and a whole bunch of other stuff in there.
My dad is into generic dadrock, but also likes a lot of what's played on Rock radio today unfortunately. He doesn't really understand why my taste has changed an insists that I dislike bands (like Shinedown, Godsmack, etc.) simply because they're popular.
My dad's record collection consisted of a lot of good stuff like Kansas, AC/DC, and Van Halen. Although nowadays he barely listens to music at all. It's disappointing actually.
My mom's collection had a lot of Beatles, Elton John, and Cat Stevens from her previous husband. She still likes that same kind of soft rock.
My dad generally sticks to classic rock. Basically late 60's to mid 80's I want to say.
He'll find a single or two from more recent bands that he likes though, particularly 90's bands like Foo Fighters (Learn to Fly), RHCP (Under the Bridge), Radiohead (Creep), The Smashing Pumpkins (1979, Disarm).
My mom generally listens to the same stuff, although I've gotten her into Bon Iver, some The Antlers, She & Him, Opeth (only their album Damnation), some Agalloch (their album The Mantle, or at least the less black metally songs), Rodrigo y Gabriela, and some Explosions in the Sky, among others.
