It's good, but it's no Lift Your Skinny Fists. It goes post rock epic/drone piece/drone piece/post rock epic.

That's a hell of an act to follow, though. Still haven't gotten a chance to listen to it myself, but I've heard a lot of good stuff about it.

Absolutely. If I had to do a ranking for Violator, everything would be in green, but all of the singles go to the bottom. "Blue Dress" (probably my second favorite off the album, agreed) and "Halo" are two of the finest songs DM's ever done and should've been released as singles. I think I dig the acoustic rendition of "Clean" more than the final album cut, though.

The only real weakness of Violator is that it's only nine songs, really.

Only other one I kinda throw into this is Deep Blue Something's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (not really a bad song, but sounds nothing like their pseudo-R.E.M. sound they usually have).

With Grand Funk, their singles make them out to be so much tamer than they usually are. Much of their live output approaches proto-metal or metal heaviness, like "Paranoid" or "TNUC".

Yeah. The rest of Deep Blue Something's material is pretty decent jangle-pop a la the Gin Blossoms. "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is still a fantastic guilty pleasure-ish tune, though.

RO: Gauntlet Hair's 2011 album was ridiculously underrated.

Also, new GY!BE is probably my album of the year, they're pretty much the greatest band ever for me.

Early Grand Funk is something I've been meaning to explore. I'm on SS right now, so maybe I'll grab a few of their earlier albums.

For me it's probably one half-step off of my AotY candidates, but it's pretty strong.

There's probably only been 5 or 6 albums I've completely fallen in love with this year, it's been pretty weak for me, especially in regards to metal.

Would agree completely in that regard. There's been a fair bit of good metal, possibly as much as any other year, but definitely not as much "great" metal (even if we're of differing minds on what that may be).
