I just got back from seeing Super 8. I have been waiting over a year for this movie, and today it finally arrived.

It was pretty good, bordering on great. As someone said earlier, it did make me care about the characters. The special effects were fantastic, the plot was well paced, and it was interesting how they set it in the '70s. I also liked that it was original- not a sequel, remake, or adaptation like the rest of this summer's movies.

However, I don't think it was really a story worth keeping under wraps for so long. I was expecting something a lot more mysterious, but the story itself was rather predictable. If nothing else, it definitely was a good summer movie- not just because of the explosions and monster effects, but the portrayal of the general feeling of spontaneity and fun that summers past probably held for a majority of the audience. And as a hardworking college student whose summer JUST started, it was a nice reminder of how summer once was many years ago. I hope the movie does well.

Watchmen was on TV again last night, and I don't care what the naysayers say, but I still think it's a good movie and as good an adaptation of the source material that could have been made. Not every segment works equally well, but those that do are often spectacular (most notably Rorschach's capture/prison scenes/'origin', and especially Dr. Manhattan reflecting on his life while he's on Mars). The sojndtrack and score are superb as well. I only wish they'd have released the ultimate edition blu-ray over here... it's a bit too expensive for me to take a chance on whether or not a US version will work on my European PS3 (region locked blu-rays are a pain).

Just watched Harvey with a friend over Netflix. I kinda have a thing for movies based on plays. Kind of keeps the content grounded in the dialog. And of course, James Stewart was awesome. The one-sided rapport he had with this invisible rabbit was hilarious.

Last movie I saw was the new Pirates movie. Good movie, but I'm terrified of mermaids now.

Just say The Lion King for the first time in about 5 years. Final battle is one the most epic final battles in the history of final battles.

Watched Big Fish on TV yesterday. I wish Burton hadn't gone back to his usual (and by now tedious) shtick after that, because it's easily the best movie he's ever directed (although Ed Wood comes close), with actual emotion and a degree of maturity balancing out his usual quirkiness. Great performances by Ewan mcGregor and Albert Finney too.

Since I'm subscribed to netflix I've been watching a lot of movies and most of them are ****ty haha.

    Charlie's Angels - 7/10
Surprisingly good for a stupid entertainement, the clichés fit very well in the light movie.

    Being John Malkovich - 8.5/10
As usual, unique story and writing from Kaufman. His style is very recognizable and I personnaly love it. The theme reminded me a little bit of another Kaufman movie, Synecdoche New York. Spike Jonze's direction didn't amaze me but he certainly did not do enough mistakes for me to notice.

    Pi - 8/10
This is similar in style to Requiem for a Dream, but in much less annoying. The subject is very ambitious (the answer to life), but happily, Aronofsky doesn't try to answer the question. Like Requiem for a Dream, this movie looks very much like the direction experimentation of a younger director that is gaining maturity. But in this vein, the movie is quite spectacular.

    Cube - 6/10
I watched Cube when I was younger and liked it very much. Watching it again was quite a deception, the actors and actor direction are mediocre and the script is flawed. The themes and concept are very interesting but the execution is just lacking in maturity.

    Cabin Fever - 4/10
Simplist characters, predictable storyline, cheap scares inspired only by the music... It's hard to tell whether this movie was meant as a joke or not. If it is, I've seen funnier movies that intended to be more serious.

Crispin Glover is solid gold in that movie. I can watch it for him alone.

I thought Cube was pretty good for a zero-budget movie, but you're right in saying that it's a certain amateurishness to it.

Calling Requiem for a Dream annoying are fighting words, though, but that's because Aronofsky is my favorite director. I do agree, however, that Pi is a better movie.
