If you're having trouble reaching for the SELECT or BACK button on your guitar, you're most likely using a RB Guitar. RB Guitars are harder to activate Overdrive by default. I use a Guitar Hero...

You can find an optimal path online, but you should also be able to use some sort of common sense to get a path that's pretty close to optimal, as in skip fills when few notes are coming up, etc.
