If you don't mind Prog. Death, try Gojira.

Those are great records, and Welcome to Earth is AMAZING. The next record was actually more synthpop, but I love it anyhow. the last record though, 3 years ago, was just awful.
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

I'm basically looking for something obscure, unorthodox, and indie. Something that I probably normally wouldn't listen to.
that's a pretty wide range there, instantdeath... here's what immediately comes to mind, but please feel free to be more specific and i'll throw out some more names...

carissa's wierd (the misspelling is correct), three mile pilot, thingy, low, dianogah, and xiu xiu all tend to get lumped in with indie, yet don't quite fit the mold exactly.
obscurity is probably based on what circles you fly.

Best modern progressive rock/metal/etc bands, imho:

    Battles
    Dol Ammad
    Kaddisfly
    Karnataka
    Magenta

    Nevermore
    Orphaned Land

To name a few. Bolded are good for oldprog transition.

I think Spock's Beard is a good entry band into modern day progressive rock, followed by The Flower Kings and Anekdoten.

I'll have to check out Gowienczyk's recommendations.
