I managed to dig up this old thread that'll help you out. Alternative and indie kinda go hand in hand. I'm not sure what kind of experience, if any, you have in this type of music, so here's my personal beginner's list to the two styles. Some are mentioned in the thread, others may not be.

Those are all very good albums, and many are considered classics in the alt/indie spectrum. I tried to provide several different styles, so some may appeal to you right away, and others might take a few listens to sink in, I know that was the case with me for some. It's a pretty decent sized list, so don't feel like you need to listen to all right away, either. Take it slow, one after another, and see whatcha dig.

Once you kinda know what you do and don't like, feel free to ask me or any other forum members here for more recommendations.

In The Areoplane Over The Sea, Doolittle, If You're Feeling Sinister, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and Loveless are equally great starting points albeit very different sounding

Funeral is one of the biggest, most raved about 2000's album, so I figured it's obligatory listening. Plus it's a pretty great album too.

I figured we needed some indie folk in there too, and, well, I've really loved For Emma since I first heard it, so yeah, maybe positive bias on my part, but I really do think it's excellent.

Perhaps a better folk or folk-relative album would of been better. Like something by Ray LaMontagne, Devendra Banhart, Steve Earle or something. Also, even on release I never though Funeral was this higher echelon of indie rock construction, either. I maintain the thought of hype does not equal to classic status, nor obligatory listening.

What's the consensus of Moby around here because I never see him discussed? I've just listed to Wait for Me but I thought it was okay.

Like his early stuff, am pretty ambivalent on anything after (and possibly including) Play.

He's a bit of a pompous, self-righteous ass (if his writings are to be believed), but he's a decent enough musician.
