the shapes are ok when you're only dealing with a few familiar chord forms. but once you start introducing more exotic chords, they become confusing and difficult to decipher.

Yeah, I personally don't like the bumps because the differences are so slight. I can read a string of numbers a lot faster. For example, a "1" and a "2" is a lot clearer than a bump and a slightly bigger bump.

They could have tried making the peaks/valleys of the wave change color based on how many frets up/down a string is compared to the index finger (ie. red = 1 fret away, green = 2 frets away, etc). Surely this must have occurred to them, but maybe they thought it would be too confusing?
