What the devil is the point of a "protected account" on twitter? Isn't that antithetical to the entire idea of twitter?

Wait, I thought accounts had to be protected?! What?!!?

I was just looking around to find some more accounts to follow. Most of the male players I looked up were open and accepting of prospective follows, but a good half of the female players were "protected accounts." And the ones that weren't wanted to make absolutely sure you knew how really, really, really, really fond they are of Jesus.
