But that computer will be useless for editing. Even if you do get more RAM.

I'm not sure if that can handle HD video.

But wouldn't the large external HDD take care of that?

The storage of the video, yes. The editing, playing and rendering of the HD video no way. I suggest you at least go 50/50 with the camera and computer. And I agree with Munch that one camera is what you should start with. Film a thing or two with one camera and the next time you have some money you can get a 2nd then a 3rd camera. You gotta walk before you can run.

Don't jump the gun on that... that being said, Big Big Train and Steven Wilson have yet to release their new albums

Also, I'm late to this video editing conversation, and know nothing about the subject, but I will add that my guess is with any camera you plan to buy (or can afford right now), I don't think you'll need to worry about recording all day. The cameras themselves won't have enough memory or battery life (assuming you won't be indoors with access to a power outlet the whole day) to do that. You'll have to work with "clips" of film.

Also, the comment about digital zoom being worthless is a bit off-base. Digital and optical zoom are used for different things (when used correctly). You don't typically use digital zoom when recording, only playback. You use optical zoom when recording, hence the need for multiple lenses depending on what you want to focus on, etc.

Good luck, but don't expect this first run to be any sort of masterpiece. You might want to keep it really simple considering the lack of experience, just to keep yourself from getting frustrated and giving up prematurely.
