Okay, I've been trying to get into new music, because my friends are all tired of listening to my Bullet For My Valentine and Dream Theater.

That said, what are some other good metalcore and prog-metal bands, and are there any prog-metalcore acts out there? Prob'ly a stupid question, I know, but meh...

It takes a while to get accustomed to their sound. Considering you're more alt oriented you might want to check out Flip Your Wig or Candy Apple Grey, they're more alty. Then try Zen Arcade.

If those are anything like leatherface I'm interested, and I've heard of hot water music before.

if you like leatherface you're almost guaranteed to enjoy hot water music, fuel (not the popular band of the same name), and samiam, as well as blacktop cadence whom i forgot to list.

the others have a more traditional hardcore punk sound, but are still worth looking into for any punk fan.

    Metalcore:

    Darkest Hour
    God Forbid
Bleeding Through (heavier than most metalcore bands)
Throwdown (new stuff sounds just like Pantera, if you like Pantera, you'll like them most likely)
    Adversary

    Prog/prog-metal:

    Circus Maximus
    Redemption
    Fates Warning
    Riverside
    Queensryche
    Thought Chamber
    Pathosray
    Pagan's Mind

    Other bands you might like:

    Between The Buried And Me
    Cynic
    Opeth
    Nevermore
    Sanctuary
    Atheist

EDIT: Just read your above post, for God Forbid, get Gone Forever. Very good metalcore album, but really I like everything God Forbid has released.
