I also like a lot of the more "extreme" metal, although I usually prefer mid to high ranged screams over the very low growls (though I do like some metal with growling; it depends on the band).
Somewhat late, but check out the following bands:

    Antiquus
    Anubis Gate
    Briton Rites
    Hibria
    In Solitude
    Pagan's Mind
    Pharaoh
    Slough Feg
    Spiritus Mortis
    Wolf (Sweden)

I actually "bought" Wolf's "The Black Flame" through a free eMusic trial last week. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll check out the rest of these bands, along with the ones mentioned a few pages ago. I have one free album left on my trial...the challenge will be deciding what to use it on. I suppose it's YouTube time! Thanks for the suggestions!
It is not closed-minded to dislike something. It is, however, closed-minded to degrade something simply because you dislike it.

Here are some modern bands that might be outside of the "average metalhead's" palette (though I would assume many poster here already know about them)
I just realized I never thanked you for your suggestions. Thank you! Sorry it's late!

And I also apologize for the double-post. I tried all of the previously suggested solutions to the edit post bug, but none of them worked for me.

No problem. Since you have Wolf, check out Herman Frank, Loyal to None is an outstanding album that came out 2 years ago.

Yeah, editing is a pain right now. You can either click on the Edit Post button twice, or open the Edit Post button in another tab/window so you don't have to click twice.

    Realm - Endless War
Blind Illusion - The Sane Asylum

    Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly
    Toxik - World Circus
    Coroner - R.I.P.
    Xentrix -For Whose Advantage?

A lot of this is more technical and a little bit less harsh than Thrash like Toxic Holocaust. Most lack harsh vocals like death growls.

    • Red House Painters
    • Why?
    • The Jesus and Mary Chain
    • Cold Cave
    • Wipers
    • Darkthrone
    • Carissa’s Wierd
    • Galaxie 500
    • Amesoeurs
    • Alcest
    • Nick Drake

    Unwound, their entire discography.

Also, grab Built to Spill's Keep It Like a Secret, some Neurosis, Spiritualized, Swell's 41, and Chokebore's A Taste for Bitters.
Despite all my rage, I'm still just Nicolas Cage
