Cobham's one of the few that can be crazy technical and still groove like a monster.

As far as Jazz/Jazz Fusion is concerned.

But thank you for the Don Ellis rec.
Well, I'm not into fusion as much as other genres of jazz, but you might want to check out John McLaughlin's solo career as well as some albums by Herbie Han****, Pat Metheny, and Chick Corea.
Would you pay for music by Beck?
    Maybe.
What if you heard he owned a plane made of gold?
    Sure.
Good, because he needs the money.

Oh, right, actual album recs so you aren't completely in the dark exploring these artists' vast discographies!

Herbie Han****: Mwandishi and Fat Albert Rotunda
Chick Corea: Light As a Feather
Pat Metheny: New Chautauqua and Letter From Home
    John McLaughlin: My Goals Beyond

I love Soundgarden, whether it's Ultramega OK or it's Down On The Upside. What bands can you recommend? I was thinking of Alice in Chains, but which album(s) to get?

Go with Dirt. If you enjoy that, check out both of their EPs, Sap and Jar of Flies.

I would also check out Screaming Trees, great grunge band that doesn't get a lot of notoriety. Sweet Oblivion and Dust are great albums.

Also try TAD and My Sister's Machine (which I was also recommended today)
One time some *** wore a Merzbow shirt to class so we all threw rocks at him and kicked him in the head until he died lol
