I'm not big on Stereolab or that general sound, but I think The High Llamas, Komeda, and maybe even Solex fit into a similar style.

Just found Solex's The Laughing Stock Of Indie Rock... while not quite the same thing, it's pretty interesting in and of itself. Don't think The High Llamas are really what I'm looking for, but I'll give Komeda a look later on, I'm sure.

Yeah, hopefully someone who digs this kind of stuff can help you. I can occasionally spin one of the earlier Stereolab LP's, but I rarely make it through.

I bet you'd be into some of that dark cabaret/vaudeville stuff, of which I'm not very familiar with beyond the recommendations last.fm gives.

However, if you're willing to stretch into something a bit gloomier you can find a lot of similar sections on the first three Black Heart Procession albums.
