Hey, well. I'm having trouble finding metal (whatever subgenre) that has a minimal maturity in its themes. Personnaly, I'm not really into vikings, dragons and agressive vehicules.
I think the only metal band that I enjoy is Shining (from the ones I've heard).

Don't get me wrong, though, it doesn't have to be prog/jazz metal.
It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now.

    Ugh.

I prefer the early 90's r&b-ish house stuff, even if most of it is "everybody dance now" crap. Soul to soul, d-mob, opus 3, la bouche, and all that stuff. house kinda died after trance picked up, but it's got its groove still. as long as there are dance clubs, there's gonna be house music.

Why couldn't anyone ask this about freestyle? I spent all day yesterday listening to that crap.
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

Depends on what you're referring to... in addition to what's been said already, I'd point out Vanden Plas / Abydos (considerable philosophical and religious themes) and early Sepultura (post-colonialist themes). For slightly less "mature" of themes but still outside of the normal realm of things, I'd point out Bolt Thrower (war, often from a historical context), Circus Maximus' "The 1st Chapter" (roughly influenced by the movie "Gladiator"), Korpiklaani (booze, booze, and more booze), and Sepultura's concept albums "Dante XXI" and "A-lex" (inspired by "The Divine Comedy" and "A Clockwork Orange" respectively).

it's not bad, but you don't necessarily need it.

I'm thinking this is my subject

In terms of similar bands to Kansas and Yes (symphonic progressive rock), I'd point out the other classics like:
Gabriel-era Genesis - Selling England By The Pound and Nursery Cryme
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery, Tarkus
Camel - Mirage, The Snow Goose

As far as modern bands of that style go, I'd point out:
Neal Morse-era Spock's Beard - The Light, Beware of Darkness
The Flower Kings - Paradox Hotel, The Sum Of No Evil
    Transatlantic (their entire discography).

For Dream Theater, I'd point out:
Pain of Salvation - Be, Remedy Lane
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, Fear Of A Blank Planet, The Incident
Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter
Vanden Plas - Christ 0, The Seraphic Clockwork
    Vangough - Manikin Parade

I can give more recommendations, but the dodgy text formatting system on the forums as of late makes me want to call it good with that for the moment.
