If any band summed up the words "dad rock," it'd be Wilco.

I finally got around to listening to them a few days ago (specifically, their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot).
Really good. As for the country thing, I can't speak of their other albums, but I'd say YHF isn't anything close to country.

But, yeah. Wilco is one of my favorites; but if you want something from their alt-country period over their indie rock stuff, pick up AM now.

Wouldn't it be "dadrock worship" or something? Thought you had to be at least 20 years old to qualify as dadrock

Will have to look into it. I think they're one of the highest rated bands on RYM with the "country" tag. Dunno why I've avoided them, I think it's because they seem to get the "hipster" label so often.

Do you guys have any opinion on the Country thing? I'm trying to show the most anti-country person ever that it doesn't all sound like Toby Keith. I need something that can still qualify as country, yet is very well "disguised", so to speak. Even just strong country elements or influences will do. The country I normally listen to tends to me closer to the older, folk-like stuff, and he's not a big fan of folk (alas).

Schmeankman made an awesome thread a couple of years ago outlining his top 100 Alt-Country, Country, Bluegrass, and Country Rock albums. It might help to dig through some of that stuff.

As for my own recommendation, I think Waylon Jennings is pretty good, so here's the title track from his album Lonesome, On'ry and Mean. Not sure if it's exactly what you want to show them, but it's quality stuff in my mind.

I'm not big into country, so I can't name any good artists off the top of my head that are through and through country, but I know some Bon Iver and She & Him songs tend towards country sometimes.
Bon Iver is indie folk and She & Him is indie pop (although wikipedia does classify them as alt country as well).

Jay Munly's work (Slim Cessna's Auto Club and Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots) is where I'm at.

It's basically coined as gothic country and both projects give off that common mildly dark atmosphere. In addition though, both, but mostly Slim Cessna's Auto Club has a very visual-like theme applied to them that gives off a certain quirkiness in their music.

I know iTunes' Genius has always been kinda silly, but seriously? It decided throwing a She & Him song into my hip-hop mix would be a great idea, in between Public Enemy and Nas.
