That's the beauty of it, you can make it what you want. You don't have to talk if you don't want to ,you can text only (im). I find most people switch between the two.
You have a status you can set saying- do not disturb, you are talking chat or you are busy. I think your best bet is to see if your phone can get it, then you can keep it downstairs, no one can get your number it goes through skype.

It is really useful if you have a full band, or want to invite one. Don't know if you found out yet that everyone can invite, regardless who is hosting.
Like say you and I are rocking our dlc and we are done... go to main screen and you bring in a bass and I can invite a singer or whatever.

If you don't get skype maybe we can figure out a code system again I had to just leave it when I had to run out for a sec lol.

Like @dcriptide said, use it as an IM.
    Up to you.
(I never use video. Only audio, really ... and IM for the people not in the band, but who are online.)

Just facilitates those "wait a minnut? what? did he mean to delete my song? what? lag? why isnt that invite working? we can add a Keys here, there's one online now" nonsense.
    Especially with a band.

hmmm.. didn't know that... the only time I've tried inviting someone when I was not leader, it kicked the leader out so I thought only leader could invite.

Sounds like most/all of you play some type of real instrument... am I the only one here w/ no instrument background at all? Prior to RB3 4 months ago, I've never even played a plastic instrument... lol. I'm sure enjoying it though, and surprised how far along I've gone in 4 months.

You are not alone. Before RB the only instrument I played was the baritone in grade school band.

If I remember it works like this ( someone chime in please if I am wrong)
Lets say I invite you and you and I are in my main screen... I invite Jammer and you invite polka then we play.

If you and I are playing already and we want to invite them.. it kicks you when I go back to main screen and I then need to reinvite you and we go from there (another great use for skype lol)

dcriptide - ahh, yes, that was it. I was probably in the middle of a set, that's why it kicked people off.

    No shame.
Before Guitar Hero III / Rock Band 2, I never played a guitar.
Owned a bass for 15 years. Never touched it. lol.
Plastic axes gave me the basics to break into it.
That was, what ... 2,3 years ago?
Been seriously playing bass for 1 year.

It's a great way to get into music. It got me there.

I always wondered if it helped,I've been playing guitar for like 20 years.I don't see any benefit at all from my experience on guitar.I could maybe see it on drums but not guitar,it's too different on the plastic. No strings, only buttons in a single row,and I kind of push-pull on the strum bar which is far different than picking or finger-picking.All I remember is when I got RB2,I played constantly until my hands hurt.I'd give it a rest for a day, then back at it.I'm pretty good at Call of Duty and never fired a gun in real life,if that's any kind of comparison.

I don't know about anyone else -- if I am the leader, I cannot accept an invite from anyone else or it will kick everyone else in the band off. I can invite other members without kicking others out. I just can't accept another player's invite. I don't know it works the same way if I'm not the leader.
