Depends what you want to learn to play. I will tell you that Pro Keys is discouragingly hard when you get to the upper tiers on Hard mode. Feels more like piano lessons than a game. I'm sure the Squier is the same way, but you probably hit the wall even earlier. Certainly takes a greater level of commitment than any of the legacy instruments.

I tried to add my name from here on DLC quickplay web site and it said it was taken, so if anyone wants to see what I'm playing, look for MAINEiac on there. AXEMAN

OK. I think I've got my tech "difficulties" about worked out on my end. Thanks Alfred and Madillma for your help. Fair warning -- my calibration may need some slight tweaking. If ya'll notice anything off when you are playing with me, let me know. Sally1er, I'll add u next time I log on. I look forward to rocking with everyone again soon!

Agree with Mark's answer, and adding firsthand:
(I have both a Roland E-09 for Pro Keys and the Squier)

Both have a learning curve which introduces you gently, but gets steep real fast. There is definitely a point where you hit the wall & can't sight read a track anymore without failing at 10%.

You actually have to practice the songs. *gasp*
    Like real lessons.

So I would choose the instrument you are ready to sit and noodle with for hours/days/weeks/months.

No sugar coating: it ain't easy.

(eg: I have 5 years of piano lessons as a kid and it STILL took me 2 weeks to learn 1 song on Expert Pro Keys - "People Are Strange" - practicing ONLY that song for those 2 weeks. )

    That's the downside.
    The upside?

You are REALLY learning how to play the songs!

When you crank the volume on your instrument; it's an AWESOME feeling to hear YOU playing the song, not the RB3 audio.
And yes, if you make it thru the Expert Pro level on the song - you have learned the song note-for-note.
That instant motivator is PHENOMENAL to keep you at the tedium of practicing.

That said, I like both Pro instruments, but I feel the way they structured the Pro mode for the Guitar is much more learning-friendly.
Even at Easy level, you are always playing notes which match the song.

With the guitar you are playing the correct notes on Easy. Just a single note root of the chord.
Medium makes them into simple chords.
Hard starts adding the real (harder) chords, arpeggios, etc.
    Expert is note-for-note.

The Pro Keys do not match the notes in Easy & Medium.
So if you are listening to yourself as you play thru the songs correctly (as charted), they will sound like a monkey bashing keys.
For me, this meant I couldn't bother with Easy/Medium on Pro Keys; I need that audio feedback to correct myself when I'm hitting the wrong note.

Hard level is the first time the songs start to match the actual notes of the songs.
(there are exceptions, but this is the general I found)

Granted, E/M are GREAT at gently training your finger coordination and strength; they do a GREAT job of building "exercises" into the progressing charts of the songs, getting you ready for chords.

On a music theory level -- guitar is also structured better so you learn WHY you are doing what you are doing (ie: the theory). Keys has it integrated, but you have to actively search for the understanding, they don't out-right teach it in the lessons as much.
But really, a lot of people couldn't GAF about theory ... just FYI

OK -- waaaaay more than you prob wanted.
I just think PRO mode on ANY instrument is simply: FTW

    Edit: Forgot your other question

Dress2Kill - good to finally get a set in with you. Although you caught me off guard and out of practice... been out of town for a week and just got back, and was kinda rusty to start with, but went ok anyways.

Had to run right after, as I'm starving... should be back on later.
