Post Should I get acoustic drums or not?

Update: They arrived yesterday 1-7-09! Here's the post with the pics http://www.rockband.com/forums/showp...7&postcount=69

    ----------------------------------------------------

Hi, I'm mainly a lurker on these forums for all the good info you guys put out. Anyway, so here's my story.

I bought rock band the day it was released last year mainly for guitar playing. I dabbled with the drums a bit and never really played them until this summer and for some reason I feel in love with them. Started on Medium for about a two weeks then jumped to first tier on Expert. Since then I'm up to a total of around 320 songs and can pass all but a handful of the Devil heads on Expert.

I've long since sold my RB2 drum kit and now have an Ion drum rocker with 4 cymbals (2 Crashes) and a MK1 pedal set up like most acoustic sets I've seen. Recently I've been craving to play an acoustic set, so I began to play videos off of youtube using the drum trainer in freestyle mode.

So I've seriously started looking into some acoustic drums. I have a budget of around $1000. I almost pulled the trigger today on a Pearl VX925 Vision Series with Pearl 900 Hardware and a Zildjian ZBT Cymbal Pack, it comes to a little over $1000. I also looked at the Pearl Forum complete kit it's under $700 for everything. Would I even know the difference between it and the Vision Series being just a beginner? Any other suggestions?

I'm torn between just keeping the Ion setup or buying an acoustic set. Any drummers with both which do you prefer?

I had an acoustic set, and even though I was, at the time, on five acres, I was STILL self conscious about booming out the area around me. So if you have neighbors within eyesight/earshot, think about how your playing might affect them.

With an electronic set you won't have that issue at all.

If you're thinking of ever bieng in a band you should definately get real drums.

I think you should definitely do it. I bought my first acoustic set in May and I've been having a blast trying to learn. I ended up getting a Ludwig accent kit with Paiste cymbals, but my budget was less than what you're thinking about spending.

TBH my set sounds awesome now that I put new heads/rings on it and tuned it to my liking. I know there are much better sets out there, but my set is perfect to learn on and I'm not sure I'd notice a big enough difference to justify buying a more expensive set at my current skill level.

It sounds like you've done your homework. Pearl makes great drums from all the research I did last April.
Tool for Rock Band... whatever it takes!

    Thanks for the responses guys!

I live on about 3 acres of land with fields on all sides but there is a Church on my left. Might not get to play on Sunday mornings lol. Are they really that loud?

I going to think on it and do some more research over the New Year Holiday and make a decision by Friday or next Monday hopefully.

As a beginner, you won't notice the difference between the Forum and the Visions series. My first drum set when I was 15 was a Pearl Forum set, and I kept it and used it for probably 10 years before upgrading. It was good enough to learn on and play with in several bands. Not a studio-quality professional set, but certainly good enough to serve its purpose.

They're drums, yes they're pretty loud. But not loud enough that somebody 3 acres away will be disturbed

You guys are seriously scaring me with this loudness talk.
I'm think I'm still going ahead and purchase the acoustic set along with some isolation headphones also, so I can hear the rock band music while playing.
I think it would be better to start off with the Vision set b/c I was planning to replace the cymbals of the forum with a Sabian or Zildjian pack and after that extra cost added to the Forum set it would only be an $90 difference between the two sets.

I'm going to change around my room so I can fit the Ion and Pearl set side by side so I'll have the option to play the Ion's when noise would be a problem.

Hmmm now to decide which color to get! Fun Stuff.

Was that necessary or are you always immature?

Wine Red is a choice (not Metallic) and it only comes with Black Hardware sadly. I don't care to much for the Black hardware, I would prefer chrome.
The room it's going in has dark red walls with black trim though so it would match...

    The Vision VX line has:

    Wine Red w/Black HW
    Jet Black w/Black HW
    Olive Green w/Black HW
Metallic Orange w/Chrome HW (Hard to find this one in stock though)
    Ivory w/Chrome HW
    RB Blue w/Chrome HW

You can check out some of these colors in this thread.
