I do agree he is the single most influential guitarist ever, heavy metal or not.
I didn't say percussion improv. or playing!

Blast beats may be a metal invention, but...
Well, everyone, prepare to have your guts kicked out by folk singers...

Buddy Rich recorded the first blast beats, if I recall.

Well, unfortunately for generatlizations, there is a stark difference between even metalheads. Korn, Slipknot, and Marilyn Manson can all eat a dick for all I care. Now for playing accurately alt picking arpeggios at 200+ bpm over the octatonic, chromatic, and penatonic scales isnt hard.

Those bands are just Hard Rock, so my point remains the same. And sure, might take talent, but not the amount of talent and originality metal fans would have you believe.

I have never in my life heard of such a thing. Maybe at 4th notes but you really got to get into 16ths for a few measures to be considered a blast beat.

Nah Id say they are metal, well at least the first 2. Originality is a mute point. All rock music and derivitives since the beginning of the 80's have been retreaded ground. In fact, its documented that every guitar riff possible has been recorded. There's only so much you can do with music, just look at how much you can do with a 6 piece drum set.

Documented where, and judged on what standards?

Just something you learn when picking up a guitar. Every riff on every scale has been utilized. Follow any guitar mag or watch a lot of interviews with a guitarist. The only thing that hasnt really been used are dissonant chords and the over combination of semitones. But thats just because its ******ely technical and there are not that many bands that are trying to tread that ground.

It's not really documented then, is it? Also, you've just told me things that haven't been tried! I mean, I would take tempo into the equation as well, so it's essntially impossible to ever document ever riffs.
