I like both eras as well although I didn't start getting into the band until I heard a few songs off of the "Genesis" album from friends. One was a drummer and we used to go watch him play. He'd pick a few songs from that album and just go to town....one of the coolest things I've seen and I still remember it years later.

My collection of Genesis material is from the Collins era but I have heard songs from the Gabriel era that I like and sometime in the near future I'm going to have to pick up some of their earlier material.

    Favorites...

    "Turn It On Again"
    "Abacab"
    "Misunderstanding"
    "It's Gonna Get Better"
    "Just A Job To Do"
    "Land of Confusion"
    "I Can't Dance"

If I narrowed down that bunch and went with a current favorite I'd go with "Abacab"

Favorite Songs are Fly on a Windshield and Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, with special shoutouts to Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats and Keep it Dark. I typically like the Gabriel era best, with Lamb lies down on Broadway being one of my favorite albums of all time, followed closely by selling england. From the Collins era, I love Duke and Invisible Touch (It's an epic meditation on intangibility!), and Abacab has its moments (title track, the aforementioned keep it dark, dodo). The only genesis album I really don't like is We can't dance, which was probably made on a dare. Oh, and Calling all Stations, but does anyone even consider that a Genesis album? Shipwrecked was a pretty song though.
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

The more I listen to Genesis, the more Hackett appeals to me. His guitar riffs are very innovative and original. They're never on the easy side but they blend very well with the other instruments.

Rutherford is also good, especially considering that he plays multiple instruments.

I believe Collins was great at drums (not that his voice is bad but...). I especially like his drum work on Dancing with the Moonlight Knight.

Gabriel had a decent voice (not especially good at the time), but what makes him so special is his presence live. One word: Flower. Lol.

No need to specify that I prefer their first era, lol.
It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now.

Peter Gabriel's voice is all about what it conveys, and with that said, his voice is phenomenal. He didn't have a great range, but dammit, you could feel EVERY little feeling he was trying to express.
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

I like Gabriel because my favorite album by them is The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, but I also, like a great amount of material from the Collins era
These would be my favorites from the Collins Era:
    The entire Duke album
    Entire Abacab album as well

I like both eras of singers. For those who don't remember, Phil was the drummer and back up singer through most of the Peter singing era, so it's kinda lame to seperate or say Phil wasn't part of the "prog" era of Genesis.
