    Favorite Lyricist

Need I describe the purpose of the thread? Haha.

Anyways, my favorite serious lyricist is Peter Sinfield of King Crimson. I love his use of poetic imagery that weaves itself into cryptic poetry. It can range from beautiful to sorrowful to playful and it does so quite amazingly.

For satyrical lyrics, definitely Zappa. He's always so blunt and hilarious. His religious, political and social satire is spot on, the use of language is always comedic. He also has his share of random bizarre songs that are humorous in their nonsensical nature.

My favorite rock lyricists have got to be either Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam or Robert Smith from The Cure.

Best hip hop lyricist, IMO, is Mos Def. Hands down

It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now.

I like Joni Mitchell's lyrics. I have a booklet of some of them lying around that the Guardian published once. Also, Chuck D for Hip Hop, because he has created a sort of mythos around Public Enemy with interreferential and repeated phrases, and that's always cool.

It's a three-way tie for my favorite lyricist. Stephen Malkmus, J. Mascis and Thom Yorke.
It's good to be happy. There's no hope.
