I mean I grew up on Californication and By The Way, but holy hades their 80s material is so much more edgier and better (imo) musically.

Lol, just AK...:P you can tell that John Frusciante is still having some problems...Has there been any word about a new RHCP album yet? They're on hiatus I've heard.

Don't do Van Halen, no one likes Sammy and Gary. Pink Floyd, however, have at least 3 eras that, unlike VH, don't have a landslide of preference.

I'd personally say that Mother's Milk through One Hot Minute is it's own period. They all still had the funk influence at that point, but they had shifted away from the funk/punk/rapcore style of the first three albums. MM had more of a hard rock perspective. BSSM demonstrates the roots of the style they'd build upon from Californication on, but still has a grittier, funkier feel. And One Hot Minute is sort of an interruption in the flow as it had Dave Navarro on guitar instead of Frusciante, more songwriting from Flea (with Keidis battling with heavy drug problems), and is an often overlooked period.
