    True, but occasionally you do get the Scale The Summits and Pain Of Salvations in the genre

    Also, you forgot Kamelot copycats

    Several Progressive Post-Metal bands are pretty awesome and don't fit either descriptions

    Also, Prog. Sludge metal is another interesting genre starting to emerge

    Then again, yes, they do have some songs that have a more progressive bent to them. Off of their most recent album, The Larger Bowl is a great example of this. But, for the most part, Rush anymore stays not far from conventional time signatures (4/4 and 6/8 being the most common) and standard pop music song structure (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-coda).

    If you wanted some semblance of saving your argument, you could've just said that Snakes & Arrows is arguably their most progressive album post-Moving Pictures. I'll buy that. It's still difficult to even say that it is more than a couple of more progressive songs on top of a bunch of radio-friendly material, though.
    Agreed

    If Rush are pioneers of the genre then what genre is The Moody Blues, pretty sure they were playing Prog. Rock before Rush

    The Moody Blues are an interesting point on the continuum, since they're one of the few early prog bands without an obvious psychedelia influence. But yeah, you have to point out a lot of the proto-prog and psychedelic rock bands as pioneers of prog as well.

    yeah, by calling rush a pioneer of anything, esp. prog, you basically shun Zappa, The Nice, King Crimson, Atomic Rooster, Beefheart, Soft Machine (well,pretty much the entire Canterbury Scene), Jethro Tull, VDGG, any tons of other early contributors to prog who not only did more for the genre, but were more influential

    they also were better than rush

    No, this is silly.

    Check it;

    DT seem to get a lot of shtick purely because, at least as far as I can tell, they are popular-ish. And prog isn't allowed to be popular-ish.

    Not only does this song have the time signatures, but also the more subtle things - the scale changes, constant chord changes, style changes (ragtime solo). Also, it is "progressive" in the literal sense of the word - it doesn't go verse-chorus-verse etc, it's evolves and changes throughout the entire song.

    For me, sometimes it can be hard/impossible to say what is prog and what is not. To me, prog seems more like a quality of the music rather than a particular style. Any genre can "be prog"... it gets confusing. Sometimes I wonder wether we should really call stuff "prog" or instead, just call, for example, Rush would be heavy rock that is pretty proggy, and Dream Theater would be metal that is proggy, etc. Jethro Tull would be Folk Rock that is proggy etc.

    But Dream Theater are definitely pretty damn proggy. Sure, there is proggier out there, but there always is.

    One of my favourite recent-ish albums is The Underfall Yard by Big Big Train. You can listen to the title track on their website for free and boy is it amazing.

    I don't think this has been posted in here yet, but here's a video of Arjen Lucassen talking about the new Star One album that's due in October, and there's an album art reveal at the end with a little teaser of the music. It sounds quite awesome so far.
