Listened to Motorpsycho's Heavy Metal fruit today, and really liked it, so I decided to read up on Eclectic Prog.

Turns out I'm a bit of an idiot. A few years ago, I listened to a few albums I'd heard classed as eclectic prog albums, and didn't really like them, so I assumed the whole subgenre wasn't really for me. I guess most prog is, by definition, at least a little eclectic. Seeing as I like almost all other subgenres of prog, it makes no sense for me to not like the one that mixes them all together.

So, I'm giving the eclectic stuff more of a listen, and I like what I hear (I must've made some bad choices on the albums I listened to before, can't even remember which ones they were...). I'm now a lot more interested in that new album from The Tangent, so that can only be a good thing. I just can't believe I didn't give a whole subgenre more of a chance!

Whew, caught up with my "to listen to" stack. I may peruse PA to find something else to get into, but that should be it for now...

Okay, I've now got sixteen more albums from this year to peruse. Oy.

Have a couple of questions going forward on the 2010 list:

    1) What to do with the progressive metal genres (prog, experimental, tech, post-metal)? So far I've been trying to incorporate them pretty slowly, as it's admittedly a bit of an area that I'm on the curmudgeonly side about, yet on the same hand I have a few on the list as well (and have forgotten to add Sigh's "Scenes From Hell", which should, if I were to rank it right now, end up somewhere in the top ten). Should I leave them in, omit them, break them out, what?

    2) How much detail should I put into the list? Just curious as to what everyone wants out of it. Should I list subgenres? Country of origin? Have subgenre-specific rankings? Maybe just make a webpage out of it?

    3) What to do about Pain of Salvation's Road Salt albums, and any other potential releases this year that are debatably progressive?

Fizzeler: Got a chance to listen to the new Kamelot album, as you will notice on my list. Started off very strong, then kinda petered out. Seemed, in a lot of ways, like a harder-edged and stronger-starting version of Phideaux's "Number Seven" in structure, but didn't have much going for itself past the first third of the album. Some awesome tracks, but overall a bit lacking as an album.

I thought it would be a good idea to bring this thread back since it hasn't been around in a while. At any rate, just wanted to say that Alphataurus is awesome and in general the 70s Italian scene is excellent, though I still have some work to do listening to more bands associated with it.

Yeah... kinda died out because I was the only person posting in it

Been on a bit of a progressive electronic kick as of late, between Tangerine Dream, Bass Communion, and more recent Art Zoyd (the new Art Zoyd album is fantastic).

Beyond that, well, it's pretty much a little bit of everything... mostly newer stuff, but occasionally going back to better cover some "blind spots" in my listening history.

Hearing now that the bands that released my favorite albums of the last two years both have new ones planned for 2012... Motorpsycho's new one comes out in about two and a half weeks, and Amplifier has announced they have a new album in the works for this year.

Looking very good for this year in prog, to say nothing of a handful of other expected releases.
