I think my current band obsession is John Arch.

Y'all should take a peek at his EP, A Twist of Fate. Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos, Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy, and Anthrax/Armored Saint/ex-Fates Warning bassist and solo artist Joey Vera play on the album.

On my note: Which Triumvirat album should I get next? I got Illusions on a Double Dimple and Spartacus, but I don't know which one to get next. I liked Spartacus more.

For Crack The Sky I suggest going chronologically starting with Crack The Sky

This thread must stay away from the common misconceptions of the genre (Rush, Pink Floyd, just because its a concept album/uses odd time signatures, it must be prog, Phil Collins is prog, 90125 is prog, etc.)

So you're saying Pink Floyd isn't Prog? Really. I guess iTunes and pretty much anything music related that has been written is wrong and you're saying I'm a liar for saying the Floyd is Prog. I'm not trying to start a fight, I just don't understand what you're saying.

I try to look at it this way. Take the term Progressive Rock and break it down. The root of Progressive is "Progress"

Pink Floyd doesn't progress, they just play the same thing over and over for about 5 minutes. Yes, this is coming from a guy who doesn't like Pink Floyd.

But remember that a lot of those so-called 'Progressive Rock' bands in the 70's didn't really progress, they just played what every other band before them was playing. To say that a band isn't Prog just because they didn't do something new would be to discredit the vast majority of bands in the 1970s because of their 'cookie cutter' nature.

That era was, in a sense, the way Progressive Metal is now: some bands are actually Progressive in the truest sense of the word, but a good majority of them are cookie cutter Dream Theater clones.

Rush had their Progressive Rock moments (from Caress of Steel onto, I'd say, Moving Pictures had a lot of Progressive moments), but for the most part they're just a Rock band.

From what I understand, Space Rock is supposed to be repetitive and create atmosphere rather than being bombastic and all over the place.

I could be wrong, but that's what I thought some of Floyd's stuff was: Space Rock, which is a Progressive Rock movement.

Wouldn't Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody be considered very Progressive?

Well, it progresses, just like the description of Prog Rock. So does Rush, but you say that isn't Prog. Like the poster before me, I think that that means that everybody that's classified Rush is wrong. Right...
