History of Rock for Feb 11

    Feb 11

1956 - Elvis Presley performs Heartbreak Hotel on US TV for the first time.

1963 - At a cost of 400 pounds The Beatles record 10 songs in 10 hours at Abbey Road Studios for their debut album Please, Please Me. Their cover of Twist And Shout was recorded last in one take as an after thought and Lennon's voice was displaying considerable strain at this point.

1964 - The Beatles play their first US concert at the Washington Coliseum in Washington DC. The band was inaudible through a barrage of screams from the sold out audience of 8600 fans. After the show they attend a party hosted by the British Ambassador where one of the guests snipped off a lock of Ringo's hair, which lead to the group vowing to never attend such a party again.

1965 - Ringo Starr marries his childhood sweetheart, Maureen Cox, in London.

1967 - The Rolling Stones are at #3 in the UK with Let's Spend The Night Together backed with Ruby Tuesday

1969 - The Monkees set a record when their second album, More Of The Monkees jumped from #122 to #1 in the US. It remained at #1 for the next 17 weeks.

1978 - Heart's Crazy On You peaks at #62 in the US

1982 - As Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil leave the Rainbow, with girlfriends Lita Ford and Beth Lynn, some bikers start pushing their girlfriends around after making advances on them. Nikki removes a chain from his waist and wields it around in the air during the fight that begins. Two undercover police officers arrive, one of them grabbing Nikki’s hand as he reaches for his chain, and biting it to the bone. Not realising it is a cop, Nikki retaliates by hitting him across the face with his chain until the cop pulls his gun on him to arrest him. They hit Nikki in the face with their clubs seven times, breaking a cheekbone and giving him a black eye in the process. Vince runs off as Nikki is driven to the West Hollywood Police Station, but the cops stop in an alley on the way and repeatedly kick him in the stomach and face. Nikki is charged with assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon. He spends the night in jail before Lita hocks her Firebird TransAm for one thousand dollars and gives the money to the cops, who drop the charges. They walk the three miles home and manage to get to The Whiskey in time for their show. Nikki will later write the song Knock 'Em Dead Kid about the incident.

1983 - Let's Spend The Night Together the documentary of The Rolling Stones 1981 Tour premieres at the Loewe Theater in New York.

1984 - New Moon On Monday from Duran Duran's Seven And The Ragged Tiger is #9 in the UK

1985 - Prince won Best Solo Artist at the fourth annual BRIT Awards. Also, The Police receive an award for Outstanding Contribution To British Music.

1986 - Huey Lewis and The News win Best International Group at the fifth annual BRIT awards.

1986 - John Mellencamp's Small Town is #53 in the UK.

1988 - Butthole Surfer fans in North London riot when tickets for the bands concert at the Mean Fiddler sell out.

1989 - Give Me The Keys (And I'll Drive You Crazy) the final single from Huey Lewis and The News' Small World is #47 in the US

1989 - With Appetite For Destruction at #2 and G N' R Lies at #5 in the US, Guns n' Roses becomes the first artist in 15 years to have 2 albums in the Top 5 at the same time.

1992 - Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and Mick Mars drive for over two hours through one of the worst flash-flood storms Los Angeles has ever seen. They wait over four hours for Vince to also arrive. The longer they wait, the more irate they become as Vince only needs to travel half the distance they did. As they wait for him to come to the studio, someone says they saw him out, drunk with a girl at three in the morning. Upon Vince’s arrival, they tell him during an argument that they are thinking of getting a new lead singer. Vince says the new album is stupid and disapproves of keyboards being used, before storming out of the studio, feeling he has been fired. Nikki feels he quit the band, and the point remains an interesting debate for many years.

Lita dated Nikki for quite awhile around that time period.
