I'm curious to know, so maybe I can pick up a few tips.
That was a half-assed post, wasn't it?

Yea.
I just use last.fm, sometimes Pitchfork, wikipedia. When someone recommends me something I check it out, but noly if I trust them. If it's someone I know IRL I generally pretend to have heard it and say it's crap, because they only recommend stuff I know or more nonsense that sounds like their favourite band.
Well, everyone, prepare to have your guts kicked out by folk singers...
I download random blind albums from friends off soulseek.
I also trust last.FMs recommendations and similar artist sections.
As well as other peoples suggestions and likings.

I don't know what the hell Last fm is.
I just snoop around this board and check out stuff I haven't heard.

Don't trust people, they are evil.

Other people recommend me stuff a lot. Chances are I've already heard it though (and most of it is complete **** anyway), so I get most of my actual recommendations from last.fm and just hearing people discuss it on these forums. Also, I've checked out afterstasis's recommendations thread from time to time to see what other people have recommended with regards to certain genres.
Would you pay for music by Beck?
Maybe.
What if you heard he owned a plane made of gold?
Sure.
Good, because he needs the money.
From what I currently do...
Last.fm- Recommendations (though I do wish they would occasionally recommend something completely off the wall, rather than based on what I already like), radio, friends (I'll occasionally look at what my friends have been listening to, and grab an album).
Wikipedia- Oh noes! As bad rep Wikipedia gets, it can be half decent for finding new bands, or at least, getting a good start on a genre.
Random music forums- I'll occasionally surf music forums to see what is being talked about.
I'm still not completely sure how soulseek works (It gave me an entire album in one song, and it usually wont even download), but if I can ever get it, I might add that to the list.

I'm always around for you guys to ask for help to help config. soulseek. Soulseek is the best tool ever that helped me so it helping others is def. a priority.
But yeah, like I've said before. Theres nothing better than a blind, ignorant album download. Hell, that's how I found Testament way back in 2005.
