Having CDs in the car gives it more of a personal feel. Having the limited number of possibilities makes you focus on those artists. It also gives the car a sort of personality, much like a bumper sticker would. You aren't going to be switching the CDs you keep around the car as often, so they sort of become part of the car.

I agree. Downloads and shuffle play on the ipod have kind of hijacked the album experience. I remember when I used to plan a road trip's cd itinerary ahead of time, now I just plug in the ipod.

Hear hear! I never had a cd player in a car I've owned until recently (although my ex-husband did), so I never got too attached. Cassette tapes are a different story. I used to keep a ton of them in my car back in my youth.
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

Are you kidding me, I probably have had more CDs than I've ever ripped onto an ipod at one point in my car. The ease of accessing them not withstanding, you can literally fit thousands into a few small binders.

Yes, but I don't use binders, I've only got the ones I put in my car. And in terms of music, I've got at least 5 times the albums on my iPod as I do on CD in the first place (and I'm limiting myself to 6 albums in the car)

Well that's kind of an artificial limit. And since CDs are so easy to skip they really were the end of "album play" in cars anyways.

When I was a kid and we drove around with only an 8-track, that was limiting - no mix tapes, limited storage and not everything was always available. Plus with 4 "sides" queuing up the track you wanted was an adventure.

Even though you can skip songs, you've still got specific music on the albums. The limit isn't so artificial considering the car can only hold a certain amount. You can certainly bring other CDs into the car and rotate, but that really isn't too convenient. Besides, I listen through full albums in the car, anyways, haha. The skip feature is certainly useful, though, if I got out of the car in the middle of an album and want to resume my place.

I guess what I'm saying is that even though its a physical format, CDs were the beginning of the digital age which became the iPod age. While it was a long transition, it also largely changed the way we listened to music, even if we still listened to an album at a time. That convenience was always there. I don't feel connected to an artist when buying a CD, which is probably why I still prefer to buy new music on vinyl when available. I'm also far more likely to know the names of every song, the correct words, etc. when I buy on vinyl.

I honestly cannot tell you how many albums my dad bought for maybe 1-2 songs, and has no interest for nowadays.

    Even before the CD era.
