    Officially Unofficial Watchmen Thread

So, as you may or may not know, Watchmen is a Comic Book written by Alan Moore. It was a limited series with only 12 issues and is considered one of the seminal works of the comic book medium.

It also made Time's list of the top 100 novels of 1920-2005 being the only literature presented in comic format to be represented on the list.
    http://www.time.com/time/2005/100boo...tchmen,00.html

Watchmen ,in the broadest sense, is a Superhero comic. However, it takes on the cliches of modern superheroes assessing them from a more realistic standpoint and trying to demonstrate how the real world would view people who dressed up in costumes and went around breaking peoples bones.

Words do not do Watchmen justice as it really is an experience. However, if I had to somehow describe Watchmen in a sentence, it would be this: Ironically, all of society has to be saved by those exiled from society itself.

I won't go into further detail as I don't want to spoil anything for you guys.

Watchmen, along with Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns," ushered in the current, darker era in comics.

As I'm sure most of you know from the aggressive marketing campaign, Watchmen is getting a movie adaptation directed by 300's Zack Snyder due to be released on 03/06/09

I am assembling this thread to allow members of the Rock Band community to discuss anything and everything related to the Watchmen comic and movie.

That should give you guys a good feel for the tone of the book, but I implore those of you interested to read the original book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

    Plus, it's only $ 11 at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Watchmen-Alan-...4929304&sr=8-1

I'll check here often to see if there are any questions that you guys need answering, but nothing related to the question, "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" please.

I just want more of you to become aware of this fantastic work.

Please, make any suggestions you can to improve this thread and yes comic fans, there is no squid in the movie.

I never read the comics despite the praise as I'm not a comic reader, but this has been on my radar for awhile now. I've tried to avoid spoilers but the premise and concepts I have gleaned so really cool. The advertizing has been really good too, and now I'm thinking of seeing it opening weekend.

My biggest concern is that the studio has mettled with the running time to much and it gets butchered, and we have to wait for a Kingdom of Heaven-like Directors cut to see the proper film. I get the impression that the story might require almost LOTR like freedom to really be done properly.

I picked the graphic novel up in November in anticipation of the film and was blown away. Definitely worth a read, and hopefully the movie will do a good job portraying this universe as well.

My dad bought the book when it was first released and he gave it to me YEARS ago (I must've been 8 or 9) and I finally read it last year (6 or 7 years after I got it). I can't wait for the movie. I'll probably see it on my birthday (3/14)

This is the one movie I'm looking forward to most in 2009. I finally read the graphic novel at the end of last year, and it is unbelievable. I just hope that the movie can at least come close to the greatness of the source material.

I read this at least once a year and have for years. The great thing about it is that I get something new out of it every time. I hope the movie is like this.

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for this movie to come out... Darn the additional wait!! ...March... I'm glad it didn't get pushed back further though.

I just thought it was cool that they used actual comic panels as storyboard references to stay true (at least visually) to the book.

What really amazes me about the movie is how faithful Zack Snyder has been to the original comic.

What I mean is that some of the scenes I've seen from the movie look exactly as they do in the movie and it's just breathtaking to see.

    For example, compare this http://screenrant.com/wp-content/upl...men-poster.jpg

    To this http://www.rotheblog.com/images/movi...an_falling.jpg

Also look at this picture http://screenrant.com/wp-content/upl...omic-comp1.jpg

You really get the sense that Zack loves and respects the source material and is really trying to do it justice.

It will be interesting to see how the movie does. I don't think the fanbase of the original comic is large enough to make it a box office success. But, super hero movies attract a pretty broad audience, so we'll see. This seems like it would be a better summer movie than a late winter movie, so that may work against it.

I plan to see it in the theaters, though. Never read the original comic, but it looks very cool.
