I like Audioslave, but that was basically just Chris Cornell + RATM.

I enjoy VR. Not really a super group, but def. an above average band, IMO.

Camp Freddy is pretty entertaining, but again, more of a big collaboration.

I like VR. I have mixed feelings about Audioslave, mainly because I love Cornell's vocals but it all just feels so empty without Thayil. Morello could not fill that void, no matter how hard he tried.

Then look at it as Rage with Cornell.

Morello's guitar playing isn't enough like that in RATM; he gave up more of his signature style then Cornell did to play with him. Besides, Morello goes with the rappin', yo.

as awesome as that might have been, they proved a great rock band doesn't need a guitarist to be good (which helped segway me into other key-driven rock)

I can think of four supergroups which I actively listened to since the '90s:

    Fantômas
Mike Patton (singer and sampler, Mr. Bungle and Faith No More)
Buzz Osborne (singer and guitarst, The Melvins)
    Trevor Dunn (bassist, Mr. Bungle)
    Dave Lombardo (drummer, Slayer)

    Mad Season
Layne Staley (singer, Alice In Chains)
    Mike McCready (guitarist, Pearl Jam)
John Baker Saunders (bassist, various artists)
    Brett Martin (drummer, Screaming Trees)

    A Perfect Circle (last active)
    Maynard James Keenan (singer, Tool)
    Jeordie White (bassist, Marilyn Manson)
James Iha (guitarist, The Smashing Pumpkins)
    Billy Howerdel (guitar technician, Tool)
Josh Freese (session drummer, Nine Inch Nails and The Vandals).

    Temple of the Dog
    Chris Cornell (singer, Soundgarden)
    Eddie Vedder (singer, Pearl Jam)
    Stone Gossard (guitarist, Pearl Jam)
    Mike McCready (guitarist, Pearl Jam)
    Jeff Ament (bassist, Pearl Jam)
    Matt Cameron (drummer, Soundgarden)

Sorry for the semi-necro post, but I caught these guys at their first "official" show on Wednesday. They're insane...in a really good way.

For those not keeping track, Chickenfoot is Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Chad Smith, and Joe Satriani. In classic supergroup fashion, it's basically 4 guys going nuts and managing to pull it together for some really outstanding hard rock.

The best comparison that I can make (for myself) is with Damn Yankees, who are among my favorite supergroups. I'm really looking forward to this CD.
