Being an AC/DC fanatic, I consider them Hard Rock. AC/DC considers themselves Rock and Roll, but they're Hard Rock. I always see music TV shows portraying them both as Heavy Metal. Hell, even on VH1 Classic, they Put Van Halen and AC/DC in Metal Mania. I dont understand it. I guess it considered Heavy Metal in the 80's.

Heavy Metal began with Black Sabbath and ended with the explosion of Grunge in the early 90's.

Anything before or after does not qualify as heavy metal. Of course, Metal still goes on in the form of Speed, Thrash, Death, etc. But heavy metal itself is dead with a few exceptions (Namely the newest Judas Priest album "Angel Of Retribution", which harkens back to the good days when Metal meant something)

Once, they could have been heavy metal, before heavy metal set itself apart by doing other things. I think this mostly started with Judas Priest.

Now, they are definitely not heavy metal, but considered very influential. I mean, Van Halen's virtuosity is like porn to any Metal shredder.

And AC/DC is very influential too. I would guess they would have been influential in what we now consider heavy or traditional Metal (within Metal, heavy Metal is its own subgenre, rather than the name of the whole genre).

And for those ignorants out there....Van Halen began before the whole hair band thing. They BECAME a hair band. They didnt start out like one at all exactly (sure, Roth had voluminous hair, but...). Besides, you have to be mentally sick to compare them to Poison or Motley Crue.

If you dont like AC/DC.....I dont whats wrong with you, seriously.

Metal is a totally different genre.

I realize, at the time they formed it was considered Metal, but not anymore.
Metal is just a sub-genre of Rock which is a sub-genre of the Blues.
