1. ask any fan of ex. Nickelback or Theory of a Deadman and they have never heard of Dream Theater. ever
2. Dream Theater deserves all the credit they DO get. Mike Portnoy (besides Niel Peart) is probably the best drummer of the last 30 years. John Petrucci can go toe to toe with any guitar name you can throw out. John Myung pretty much sounds like a unicorn screwing a griffin on bass and I dont even know how Jordan Rudess makes those sounds cone out of a keyboard.
granted, James LaBrie doesnt have the best voice but everyone else owns face.

I still ask: please give examples. I know they have a lot of fans and fanboys, but they are one of very few bands/performers who deserve it, IMO, and I would like to ask everyone who said "The Beatles" in this thread to please just explain. I may just agree with you if you give a good reason, but "The Beatles are overrated" as if it's just obvious won't work on me.

Your entire post baffles me, but this part in particular. An ENTIRE genre of music is over-rated? Fair enough if you say mainstream rap, since mainstream stuff is pretty bad, or mentioned just one artist like 50 Cent. but an ENTIRE genre? Every rap artist out there is over-rated?

Nickelback is *the* most overrated band. Rather than simply say this and then sit back and wait for the trolls to find me, I'll make my points more specifically:

Nickelback deserves nowhere near their levels of success, fans, money, or radio play. They are at best an average, journeyman band who wrote a couple of catchy tunes, have one HELL of a promotion machine, and got very lucky. I credit this to their apparent eagerness to sell out.

Chad Kroeger is nowhere near the edgy poet-composer some of his fans paint him to be, and should probably hand the keys off to someone else in his entourage before he downs his first Jack n' Cola of the evening.

I'd cut into the other members of the band, but I don't know them by name. I will say, however, that a band with this many albums should have displayed a modicum of musical and artistic growth by now.

Oh and now Dreamtheater is getting overrated but I cant blame, only get annoyed.
