    Alternative Country?

I just listened to 16 Horsepower and find them to be amazing. I want to start looking in to some more alternative country, but I'm not sure where to start. Any band or song suggestions?

Alt-country is great. If you pay attention to the DLC announcements, the artists in the recent alt-country pack are all gold. Especially Neko Case.
Would you pay for music by Beck?
    Maybe.
What if you heard he owned a plane made of gold?
    Sure.
Good, because he needs the money.

For the love of God, listen to the Drive-By Truckers.
All of the following albums are outstanding:

Southern Rock Opera (especially if you're a Skynyrd fan)
    Decoration Day
    The Dirty South
    Brighter Than Creation's Dark

Agreed. Drive-By Truckers are great as well, probably my favorite alt-country band.

My favorite is probably Whiskeytown or Uncle Tupelo.

If Wilco can be counted as alt-country, then I'd say them, but I really don't see them as alt-country for most of their career.

Remember that alternative country is more of a movement then a genre.

I do find Wilco as more of a "indie" rock band, though, yeah.

Yeah, alternative country is even less of a genre than nu-metal. In essence, any country that isn't conventional country is alt-country.

If I were to call it a genre I would use the:

"It's country with a alternative rock, lo-fi or back-to-roots approach rather than traditional CMT workings."

    Definition.
