I guess that makes sense, but he sounds above their average studio recordings when he sings songs in his soul background via http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OSG4C1Qctw

What's baffling to me is that Muse isn't more popular in the US. They're huge in the UK and Europe, but in the US, the only people who've heard of them come from RB & GH fans and the most well-versed alt-rock fans.

I wish to god Muse would unleash a hellacious American tour. I'd go to every single show.
No. No. No. Oh god No.

Muse isn't even really progressive. They have some elements, but they are not prog rock.
They aren't carrying any of those genres to "new heights."
Their guitar and drum work isn't really anything special, and the vocals get stale pretty quickly. The bass is pretty good, but nothing to crap your pants over.
Everybody and their brother knows who Muse is in the US. Not everybody likes them, but the fans apparently only know how to suck Bellamy's dick.

Seriously, Muse is pretty good. But Muse fans have became a voracious group of self-indulgent idol worshippers. They elevate Muse to levels that are far beyond Muse.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Muse. I listen to one or two Muse albums a month. They have some really good songs, but also a fair bit of filler material that's nothing special at all.

But calling them Pink effing Floyd is ridiculous.

That's actually pretty good. I guess they all have talent, then. Well, except for Pete. His lyrics and his bass playing both fall flat, in my opinion of course.

^As a former "OMGMUSE!!!" fan, I'm going to have to agree here. Muse fans are more often than not annoying semi-"artsy" pubescent girls. I'll listen to them now, but if I do, it's always Origin of Symmetry. That's really the only album I like from them.
Would you pay for music by Beck?
    Maybe.
What if you heard he owned a plane made of gold?
    Sure.
Good, because he needs the money.

And Tool says they hate King Crimson. (not really lol, but you get what I mean)

Seriously, though, they should really drop ATDI as one of their influences, since a lot of people consider them to be Mars Volta lite.
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

For me, Muse is the ONLY decent band to emerge from this decade so far. I rank them right up there with Radiohead (one of the greatest bands still active), and I *do* see Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy as the new standard-bearers for Floyd and art/space prog. In some respects, I'd even elevate Muse *over* Floyd (yes, I went there) on technical merit alone --- Floyd is stoner rock, while Muse is hard-driving, hard-gunning, ass-kicking variations on the themes that Roger and David and Syd were developing in the 70s.
