    Quick question on Drum Brains

Is it fair to assume that everything that works through the Drum rocker controller will work on any Drum moudle? For example I have a Roland KD8, but 2 Yamaha and 1 Pintech Cymbals, 1 roland pad, 3 Ion.

Is the DM5 the best one to get for this? or could i just get any brain that has 1/4" inputs on it?

    Thanks for the help.

I personally would recommend a Roland brain over the DM5. Specifically the TD-3 or 4. I have the TD-3 and it works great, can get one used on ebay for about $200.

Well, the general response is that in principle, any decent drum module should have the capability to adjust a series of parameters to allow you to plug in different types of triggers, however this does not mean all trigger combinations will work flawlessly with all drum brains.

The parameters you need to adjust when dealing with triggers non-native to the brain are usually gain, cross-talk, retrigger, threshold, etc; the names may vary but they all do very much the same; you may need to actually read the manual to understand what things to change. The DM5 is capable of adjusting the values of each individual input so in principle it is possible to get all those different triggers to play relatively nice with the DM5.

Something to keep in mind is that the Roland triggers are usually very "quiet", meaning that you need to crank up the gain and other levels in order for the brain to detect them. If you are using a Roland module for roland triggers then there's little you have to do, other than telling the drum brain the type of trigger and it will auto adjust levels to pre-set values.

Pintech triggers are on the hot side, so you will probably end un tuning levels down when dealing with inputs that have Pintech triggers. Look for HopeDrums videos in youtube, where Brian has several good walk-throughs on how to set Pintech pads/cymbals with pretty much any drum brain available on the market today.

Another thing with the DM5 is that it does not support dual zone triggers natively, as each individual port is single zone only. There are tricks to get dual zone triggers to work and for that again I recommend you looking for Brian's videos in youtube.

I personally have an Alesis Trigger IO module and an assorted collection of triggers (Roland, Pintech, Simmons/Ion); so I am familiar with your situation as I have tweaked and adjusted my different triggers to the point where I am finally happy with them.
