Definitely agree with you on John Mellencamp.

My personal favorites are Donovan, Nick Drake, Bruce Springsteen, John Denver (guilty pleasure I don't feel so guilty about), Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, and Nelly McKay.

Van Morrison. John Hiatt deserves a spot on the list somewhere too. Been listening to both of them a lot lately.

Edit: No originals on youtube for any Van Morrison. Found some for John Hiatt.

Personal favorites would be Tom McRae, Suzanne Vega and Tori Amos (although everything past Beekeeper has been pretty poor).

    Some excellent selections already.
Others that come to mind: Bob Marley, Carole King, McCartney/Lennon, Billy Joel, Henley/Frey.
    And you can't forget Manilow.

Also, I seem to notice that the very best songwriters are not necessarily the best singers. They tend to have voices that best lend themselves to their own creations.
Not to say there are not songwriters with excellent vocal ability, but as a whole most would not be as famous if not for their ability to write amazing songs.

This was a great thread idea. Would be fun to keep track of all the ones mentioned so far in the first post if you feel like it.

Two more that haven't been mentioned yet....Steve Winwood and James Taylor.
